  2. Main Building • New / old windows – warped, rotten • Little control of heat • Poor decorative repair • Poor storage Not fit for 21st century education

  3. Gym / Swimming Pool • High alumina cement beams – unsafe? • Recommendations ignored twice in 30 years • Pool – leaks - no working filter; tiles lacerate pupils. Not safe for 21st century education

  4. Maths Block • Growing crack? • High alumina cement beams • Windows unsafe? • External cladding unsafe? Not fit for 21st century education

  5. New Block • Asbestos risk ? • Deplorable ceilings – asbestos risk? • External cladding unsafe? Not safe for 21st century education

  6. New block cont. • Skylights, water tank, SEU door ALL leak. • Office areas unusable • Unbearable temperature range • Fans noisy and draughty • Art room hits 100 degrees! Not fit for 21st century education

  7. Outside • Unsafe surroundings • Waterlogged pitches • No covered areas • WONDERFUL all weather pitch. Not fit for 21st century education

  8. IT • 2 years ago the school only had 1 interactive whiteboard • Now there are 14 – thanks to Barbara George • We need 40+ to have one in every classroom. Thisis not 21st century education

Social Area, Toilets and Access • Canteen seats 100 / feeds 300-400 a day. • No social areas • No 6th form common room. • One toilet for 400+ boys and two for 400+ girls!! • Single lift is in Main Building • This school is not designed for this number of pupils Not fit for a 21st century education

  11. A Diary of Disruption • November – heating for failure 10 days. • January – loss of heating for 4 days. • January - pipe burst in renovated hall. • January – asbestos scare closes new block This is not a 21st century school

  12. The Wider Context • Caithness needs a skilled workforce. • Caithness needs an excellent infrastructure post Dounreay to attract inward investment. • Children need a stimulating environment. Caithness has special needs now

  13. Conclusion - 2nd Class Citizens • Wick High decaying since 1970s • Continual disruption • Inadequate budget • Huge Emergency spend • Children's perception and esteem? • Why no PPP? • Would this happen in a city? Our children deserve better

School Survey • Wick = C (poor) for condition and D (bad) for suitability (HC 2005) • NEW secondary schools planned since 2005 • Millburn Academy rated B, C = NEW SCHOOL • Portree High School rated C, C = NEW SCHOOL • Dingwall Academy rated D, D = NEW SCHOOL • Lochaber High School rated C, C= REFURB. • WHS catchment is an area of special need This is not fair to our children

  15. WHS Parent Council Mission • A small refurbishment will not make this a school for the 21st century. • This school needs new school premises or a major planned refurbishment. Help us NOW New Opportunities forWick
