  1. Silence Hurts Us Speak Up!

  2. Silence Hurts Us • Imagine this: • The bell for lunch is about to ring… • Tommy Trackstar and Hannah Hurdler wait at the classroom door… • the bell rings and they’re off… • sprinting down the hallway at 100 mph • they must be the first in the lunch line!

  3. Silence Hurts Us • Polly Pedestrian calmly walks down another hall… • she approaches a corner… • Tommy and Hannah approach the same corner from a different hall… • they have slowed to 98 mph - (it is a corner)

  4. Silence Hurts Us • CRASH! • Books and bodies (but no blood - we must keep this G rated) are scattered everywhere. • What if someone would have said “Please don’t run.” • or “Why such a hurry?” or “Slow down.” • Bumps and bruises could have been avoided.

  5. Silence Hurts Us • Speak Up • because SilenceHurtsall of Us

  6. Silence Hurts Us • Imagine if… • Wally Wallwriter was about to scribble his silly signature on the bathroom wall… • and someone speaks up and says • “Wall writing is wrong Wally – Won’t you stop?”

  7. Silence Hurts Us • Gabby Gossipwicky starts a conversation with • “Did you hear that so and so said such and such and …” • and someone speaks up and says • “Say something nice or nothing at all.”

  8. Silence Hurts Us • Speak Up • because SilenceHurtsall of Us

  9. Silence Hurts Us • Imagine if… • Buddy Budgeway tried to tiptoe to the top of the lunch line … • ChelseyCheatster tried to copy Cathy’s computer comments … • and someone speaks up and says • “Stop that. It isn’t right.”

  10. Silence Hurts Us • Imagine if … • Brutus Bullyboy persistently pestered Victor Victimson… • and no one said anything.

  11. Silence Hurts Us • Every day someone is a victim of bullying. • Don’t let it happen. • Speak up. • Because Silence Hurts all of Us

  12. Silence Hurts Us • SO … you aren’t someone who bullies others, and you haven’t been bullied yourself. • BUT … if you see it happening to others, you can help put a stop to it. • It might be easier to stand by and watch, or to try to ignore it, but think about how you would feel if the bullying was happening to YOU.

  13. Silence Hurts Us • Speak up! • Say something like: • “Cut it out.” • “Nobody thinks that’s funny.” • “That is not cool.” • When kids who bully see that other kids don’t think it is cool, they are more likely to stop.

  14. Silence Hurts Us • One of the best things you can do for a person who is being bullied is just to be there for him or her, and be a friend. • Don’t be just a bystander, stand by them. • Report the bullying to an adult.

  15. Silence Hurts Us • Who should you tell? • Teacher • Counselor • Parent • Coach • Resource Officer • Administrator

  16. Silence Hurts Us • The SHU Box is a way to anonymously report bully, hazing, and other student issues. • The SHU Box was created to break the code or culture of silence that exists in schools.

  17. Silence Hurts Us • What types of things can I report? • You can report through the SHU Box anything from bullying to drugs to sexual harassment, discrimination, verbal harassment, threats, vandalism, or other non-emergency but dangerous behavior.

  18. Silence Hurts Us • Why should I report? • By submitting a report, you help administrators to become more aware of the incidents happening in our school. They can’t fix problems if they don’t know about them. By reporting, you make our school a better and safer place to be.

  19. Silence Hurts Us • When will someone read the comments placed in SHU Box? • Daily. Everyday a responsible adult will read the comments and report the findings to the appropriate people. Counselors, the resource officer, and/or an administrator will then act to fix the problem.

  20. Silence Hurts Us • If you would like to report an issue please write your comment on a piece of paper and take it to the counseling office. The SHU box will be available for you to report your comment. • Please only put comments in the SHU box, and only comments that you know to be true and that you think might help your peers.

  21. Silence Hurts Us • Now you can “Speak Up” digitally. • Go to the TH Bell Website

  22. Silence Hurts Us Click on the Studentsmenu > Silence Hurts Us > to find a digital way to report any incident.

  23. Silence Hurts Us • Speak Up • because SilenceHurtsall of Us
