  2. How to navigate the tutorial? • Clicking on a picture will take you to the specific website for you explore what the site has to offer. Clicking on the EDUTECH picture will take you to the MSU MAET program site. • Additional information is also provided through a hyperlink. Click on the underlined text to open the website to access additional information. Click to access the MSU MAET program site. • Use the buttons to the right to navigate through the tutorial. You will experience forward and backward arrows as you proceed through the tutorial. Click the forward arrow button to continue.

This presentation will introduce you to a small segment of the web 2.0 tools that can be utilized within the classroom either by you (the educator), the students, or both to develop the skills needed to become 21st Century Learners. • For the purpose of this tutorial, the web tools are separated into 5 categories: • Presentation • Video/Photo Sharing • Websites/Blogs • Collaboration/Organization • Creativity

Objectives: • The learner will identify what ISTE stands for and the standards they have set in educational technology. • The learner will develop an awareness of the Web 2.0 tools and an understanding of the products they can create. • The learner will identify one web 2.0 tool in each of the 5 categories (presentation, video/photo sharing, websites/blogs, collaboration/organization, creativity).

ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) - premier membership association for educators and education leaders engaged in improving learning and teaching by advancing the effective use of technology in PK-12 and teacher education NETS - help measure proficiency and set goals for what students (NETS•S), teachers (NETS•T), and administrators (NETS•A) should know and be able to do with technology in education. NETS-T standards 2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. 1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. 4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.

  6. What is Web 2.0? Web 2.0 has been defined many ways. According to Dictionary.com, Web 2.0 is the internet viewed as a medium in which interactive experience, in the form of blogs, wikis, forums, etc, plays a more important role than simply accessing information. Discovery Education suggests that Web 2.0 is about revolutionary new ways of creating, collaborating, editing and sharing user-generated content online. These tools started with a blog here or a WebQuest there, but teachers (new to using this technology) found the time and tasks to be overwhelming. With the increased focus on creating 21st Century Learners, these web tool have increased in importance and abundance. This makes it is even more important that teachers embrace the tools available taking time to explore and plan how these tools can be used seamlessly within the classroom.

  7. Where do we begin? With new technology appearing all the time, a logical question is where do we begin. Do we begin with the teachers? Do we begin with the students? We need to begin with both! This process begins by meeting the teachers and students where they are and developing the skills from there. These web tools must be thought of just that, TOOLS! They are not the miracle in education, but through proper planning, teaching, and assessment, these tools can begin developing the skills of collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity.

  8. Kathy Schrock has developed a very resources website relating to educational technology. She also has created a comprehensive presentation called Computers as a Door. This video gives an overview of web tools based on various categories. Some of the categories and tools are similar to what you will learn about in this presentation, but many are not. If you are new to web 2.0 tools and/or still a little “tech shy”, please watch the video before proceeding on with this lesson. If you feel comfortable with your knowledge of web 2.0 tools, you may proceed through the presentation. However, I highly suggest you take some time to watch the video to develop a better understanding of the additional tools available as this lesson only focuses on 5 categories containing 18 tools out of the 100’s available.
