  2. Overview • When - Use pinyin when you only know the sound of the word and want to know how it is written. Use it when you write. - Use radical and number of strokes when you want to know the sound and/or meaning of the word. Use it when you read. • How - Pinyin method - Radical method

  3. Pinyin Method • 1. You know how to say “peng2 you3” • 2. Now you want to know how to write it. • 3. Take your dictionary. • 4. Flip through the page till “peng” • 5. Find the second tone “peng”s. • 6. Check the meanings and find “朋“. • 7. Now try “you3”

  5. Radical Method • 1. Now you have the character “你” and want to know how to read it and what it means. • 2. Pick the radical “人“ and find it in the “radical index table” with a radical number next to it. • 3. Find the radical category/column according to the radical number in the next “table of characters”. • 4. Count how many strokes for the rest of the character, “尔”. • 5. Find the character under the corresponding “stroke number” heading, e.g. “五画”. • 6. Find the character and you’ll see the pinyin. Now you know what to do.
