  2. An Introduction • Aesthetics (also spelled æsthetics) is commonly known as the study of sensory or sensori-emotional values, sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste. More broadly, scholars in the field define aesthetics as "critical reflection on art, culture and nature” • Aesthetics studies new ways of seeing and of perceiving the world What is aesthetics?

  6. Aesthetics is EMPIRICAL The observer PERCEIVES the Object. Perceiving the object is an experience.

  7. An Introduction Aesthetics is INDUCTIVE The observer draws general statements of the meanings of the Object by observable properties.

  8. Aesthetics is SUBJECTIVE The observer uses his own personal experience to arrive at statements of an Object.

Can Aesthetics be Objective? • Institution theory • "In other words, if you want to know whether or not something is art, don't look at the object in question; instead, look to see how people are treating it, where they put it, and what they are saying about it. If people value an object highly, protect it, study it, exhibit it in art galleries and museums, and write about it in art magazines and art history books, then it's clear that people involved have decided that the object is art."
