  1. Pre-incarnation Appearances of Christ(Theophanies)“The Angel of the Lord”

  2. Messianic Appearances • Jesus appeared to men in the Old Testament on several different occasions. He appeared to Abraham, Sarah, and Jesus appeared to men in the Old Testament on several different occasions. He appeared to Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar and he was called The Angel of the Lord. • He was worshipped (Exodus 3:1-5) *note regular angels are not to be worshipped! • The Angel of the Lord is not the Father, but the Father sent him. • He declared Himself to be God (Gen.31: 11-13) Jacob also called him God, by declaring the place he met the Angel of The Lord “Peniel”, The place I saw God. • Hagar and he was called The Angel of the Lord.

  3. The Captain of The Lord’s Army • He appeared to Joshua as “The Captain of the Lords Army”, He commanded Joshua to take off His shoes and worship Him. (Remember Moses and the burning bush) • 14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? • 15 And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.(Joshua 5)

  4. God is Unique to The Individal • Something we must realize about God, he appeared in many different forms: Moses saw Him as a burning bush / Joshua as a mighty warrior / Isaiah saw Him high and lifted up with a train of glory that filled the temple / Ezekiel saw Him as a wheel in the middle of a wheel. Why am I saying this? We have a tendency to put God in a box called “perception”. God can and has appeared in many different ways, why? I really believe God is unique to the individual

  5. The Law Could Not Change Us • Romans 8:3 tells us, “For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son, in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.” It says God sent HIS SON! I believe The Word (Jesus) always had a father and son relationship, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, and the Word became flesh. The triunity of God has always existed.

  6. God Gave us a Preview • The Children of Israel were given a preview of what the Messiah would be like. Some scriptures said he would be a prophet (like Moses), a priest like Melchisedek, a king like David, or a servant that suffers for his people (Isaiah 53). • 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. • 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

  7. Like David • The Messiah (Meschiach = One anointed to perform an appointed task by God) Another Messianic expectation was one of royalty. A king like David! (I Sam. 9, 16; II Sam. 7; Psalm 89; John 1:20) • 8 Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: • 9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.

  8. The Resume of the Messiah (in Psalms) • The book of Psalms is a virtual treasure chest of Messianic prophecy. Let’s take a look! • I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. (Psalm 2:7) • Psalm 2:7 – This verse let’s the reader know that the Messiah would be deity. (The So of God) • I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. • Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.
