  2. I. Results of the Uprisings • 1848 uprising in France starts revolts all over • Vienna revolts • Prince Metternich resigns • Emperor Ferdinand stepped down • Hungary revolts led by Lajos Kossuth 1. Austrian troops put down with the help of Russia

  3. II. Formation of the Dual Monarchy • 1867 Dual Monarchy formed (Austria-Hungary) – after loss of 7 Weeks War • Common ruler Francis Joseph I and three ministries controlled war, finance, and foreign affairs • each had its own parliament • Still division among nationalities

  4. III. The Ottoman Empire and the Balkans • Region contained Serbs, Bulgarians, Romanians, Albanians, and Greeks • Decline of Ottoman rule and nationalism increased discontent • Greece gained independence in 1829 • Serbia gained some self rule • Foreign countries get involved • Russia supports nationalist • Great Britain supports the Turks

  5. IV. Congress of Berlin and the Balkan Wars • 1875 Revolts in Turkish provinces • 1877 Russia declared war on Ottoman Empire • 1878 Turkey defeated and forced to sign Treaty of San Stefano • Independence to Romania, Serbia, and Montenegro • Self-rule to Bulgaria- Russian occupation
