  2. YOUR TASK.

  3. It is 1758.. News is coming in about some important events in the Seven Years War against the French. Equiano is on board various Royal Navy ships. • Your task is to produce 3 newspaper reports that give a thorough overview of the news as it comes in. • For each report, you will need to include: • A headline • A picture (from the ones available) • A short paragraph reporting the news • You will be working in real time, so you need to think fast and make quick decisions!

  5. The attack on Louisbourgh Our land forces laid seige to the town on Louisbourgh, while the French men of war (ships) were blocked up in the harbour by the fleet … I saw some of the ships set on fire ... And I believe two or three of them were quite burnt. about fifty boats belonging to the English … attacked and boarded the only two remaining French ships. They also set fire to a seventy-gun ship. At last Louisbourg was taken … to my great joy.

  7. A surprise attack by the French By this time both fleets began to mingle … At that instant the other (French) fleet … gave us a broadside (opened fire with all their cannons). Nothing could create greater surprise and confusion … the wind was high, the sea rough, and we had our lower and middle deck guns housed in, so that not a single gun on board was ready to fire at any of the French ships. However we gave them chase … We chased them all night; but the next day they were out of sight, so that we saw no more of them.

  9. Gibraltar The engagement now commenced with great fury on both sides … during which I was frequently stunned with the thundering of the great guns, whose dreadful contents hurried many of my companions into awful eternity. At last the French line was entirely broken, and we obtained the victory, which was immediately proclaimed with loud huzzas. At midnight I saw the Ocean (a French ship) blow up, with a most dreadful explosion. I never beheld a more awful scene. About the space of a minute the midnight seemed to turn into day by the blaze.
