  1. MK Fast Broadband Campaign Adam Chapman

  2. About MK BAG • Established in 2003 • 1200+ members, including Councillors, businesses and the public • Proven successes • BT long distance trial & UK implementation • ntl: wireless trials • Current FTTP trial • Trusted source of information

  3. Aims of MK BAG • To raise awareness of why better broadband is needed in MK • To eliminate broadband "not spots" • To maximise the speed of MK broadband • To see a cable TV replacement implemented • To keep MK at the forefront of economic development in the region

  4. But why? • Fast broadband brings a lot of benefits... • Staying in touch (Skype, IM, video calling) • Working at/from home • Large email attachments • Less commuting (= less traffic jams, CO2, lower cost to the individual, more money in the local economy) • Better work-life balance • Cloud computing revolution that’s coming • Economy & investment • Continual growth of MK = more jobs, better pay • Entertainment • iPlayer, YouTube, online gaming, streamed radio, cable TV

  5. Campaign benefits for MK Citizen • Target readership with an important issue – across public & business • Drive traffic to MK Citizen website – and create stickiness with forums, downloadables • Create a sustainable week-on-week campaign that builds and generates engagement and interactivity • A winnable campaign, demonstrating the success of MK Citizen above MK News

  6. What should we campaign for? • ‘Basic’ FTTC - 40Mbps broadband to every premises in MK by 2012 • ‘Superfast’ FTTP – 100Mbps broadband as an upgrade, across +5 years after 2012 • A viable cable TV replacement

  7. Targets for our campaigners • BT Openreach (for more openness) • Virgin Media (cable TV replacement) • MK Council • Parish councils (local interest and £) • Ward councillors • MP’s • For the MK Citizen • Both the public and businesses, creating cross-over articles. Helps direct readership of small businesses or one-man-bands between sections

  8. Activities • Write letters, emails, make calls to targets • MK Citizen/MK BAG to publish templates, driving traffic to our websites • Sign up to trials as they come on-stream • Creates on-going information from MK Citizen • Sign up for MK Citizen/MK BAG updates • Share experiences/need for fast broadband with other readers & campaigners • Creates letters or online forum interaction for a number of weeks

  9. Sustainability of the campaign • The campaign can’t be a “one-week wonder” • Creating on- and off-line interaction, follow-ups, stickiness and spiral engagement prevents this • News of new trial releases – connection successes • Stories of how others are using – and would like to use – faster broadband to inspire engagement • Replies from letters/emails received back • Interviews with campaign targets such as MKC, MKP, MK CoC, OR, VM, Pete Winkleman etc • iPlate giveaway
