  3. The time and location in which a story takes place For some stories the setting is very important for others it is not Place Time Weather conditions Social conditions Mood or atmosphere Setting

  4. Plot • How the author arranges events to develop his basic idea • The sequence of events in a story or play  • A summary of the events that happen in the story • There are five essential parts of plot

PLOT LINE • 1 – Intro • Beginning of story • 2 - Rising Action • Where the conflict is reveled • 3 – Climax • Highest point of interest • Turning point of the story • 4 - Falling Action • Events begin to resolve or work out • 5 - Resolution • Denoument (the final outcome & resolution of problems in the story

Conflict • Essential to the plot  • Without conflict there is no plot • The struggle between opposing sides • ties one incident to another • makes the plot move • Is not just arguments • It is any form of opposition that faces the main character • Within a short story • there may be only one central struggle • there may be one dominant struggle with many minor ones.

  7. 4 Kinds of Conflict • Person v. Person (physical) • leading character struggles with • his physical strength against other men • forces of nature • animals. • 2)  Person vs. Circumstances (classical) • leading character struggles • against fate • circumstances of life facing him/her.

  8. 4 Kinds of Conflict • 3)  Person vs. Society (social) • leading character struggles against • ideas, • practices, or • customs of other people. • 4)  Person vs. Self (psychological) – • leading character struggles with himself/herself • with his/her own soul • ideas of right or wrong • physical limitations • choices, etc.

  9. Character • Antagonist • The villains / bad guys of the story • Protagonist • The hero of the story

  10. Theme • The life lesson or message being given by the story • The author's underlying meaning or main idea that he is trying to convey

  11. Examples of Theme • Some simple examples of common themes from literature, TV, and film • things are not always as they appear to be • Love is blind • Believe in yourself • People are afraid of change • Don't judge a book by its cover

  13. Group Assignment • Think about the book, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr • Using the paper at each table write about the elements of the story • Each person needs to write using their own color • This is a collaborate activity
