  1. St.Vincent Girls’ High School Name: Dana Phipps Class: 5 Plain Subject: Biology Teacher: Ms Veira Date:10th September 2010

  2. Insect life history The life history of a mosquito and housefly

  3. Objective 1. To briefly identify and evaluate stages in the life history of mosquitoes and house flies 2. To Highlight the various methods in controlling the spread of mosquitoes and houseflies

  4. What is an insect? Insects belong to a large invertebrate group called arthropods. All insects share several, easily-recognizable external characteristics including: • Three body segments (head, thorax, and abdomen) • Three pairs of jointed legs (all of which are attached to the thorax) • Antennae (although there are a few species of insects with no antennae) • Wings (though there are some flightless insects)

  5. The main body parts of an insect

  6. Commonly known insects • Butterfly • Beetles • Mosquito • Ant • Housefly

  7. Stages of life Mosquitoes and houseflies both undergo complete metamorphosis, they go through four (4) distinct stages in a lifetime. • The life stages are as follow: Egg larva pupa adult

  8. Illustration: Stages in mosquito life cycle

  9. Mosquito life process • Hundred eggs are laid in and around the water in which they float • Eggs hatch into larvae, which lives in standing waters they come to the surface of the water to breathe. • The larva then develops into a pupa, this stage is a resting, non-feeding stage in the mosquito life cycle. • When development is complete the pupa skin splits and the adult mosquito emerges. • The adult mosquito then rests on the water surface, to dry and harden its parts.

  11. Housefly life process • Eggs are laid on soft wet decaying organic matter. • Eggs hatch into a larvae, that breathe through tubes while hanging from the water surface. • The larva stage ends and the pupa stage begins in which the pupa remains inactive. • The adult fly emerges after the pupa stage is over and rest on the water developing it wings and drying itself.

  12. Housefly Features • Egg: tiny and white ( resembles rice grains) • Larva: pale and white smooth maggot • Pupa: lives in dark brown pupa case • Adult: has a gray thorax with 4 dark longitudinal trips and wings.

  13. Mosquito borne disease Types of Mosquito-borne diseases: • Malaria • Yellow fever • Dengue fever • West Nile fever To prevent these disease from spread, one should use proper control methods for mosquitoes.

  14. Housefly • House flies contaminate things they touch such as food. • Their hair and the tip of their mouth carry germs from garbage and sewage. • If food touch by housefly is intake it can cause problem such as diarrhea and also disease from pathogen the fly was carrying.

  15. Controlling mosquitoes and houseflies at each life stage Egg, Larva and Pupa stage • Empty used containers with water accumulation. • Keep containers under cover or upside down to prevent refilling. • Filling in low spots in your yard that hold water for a number of days when it rains. • Fill or drain swampy areas, puddles and tree stumps. • Clear clogged gutters and repair leaks. • Place oil in stagnant water to prevent larvae form breeding.

  16. Controlling mosquitoes and houseflies at each life stage Adult stage • Spray with insecticide. • Get rid of decomposing organic matter so house would not have a breeding ground. • Keep garbage in a properly sealed garbage can and bag. • Get rid of any waste around the yard.

  17. Mosquito facts • Only female mosquitoes bite; using proteins from a blood meal to produce eggs • The mosquito bite does not cause the itchy bump on the human skin—it is the mosquito saliva that causes it. • Mosquitoes lays their eggs in standing or slow-moving water. Weeds, tall grass, and bushes provide an outdoor home for adult mosquitoes. • Generally, adult female mosquitoes have a life span of 2 weeks to one month while adult male mosquitoes only live one week.

  18. Housefly facts • Flies live in garbage and wherever animal feces are available. Dead animals attract flies within hours after death. Most flies are diurnal. • Larvae feed on decaying meat and feces. Adult flies feed on sugary food of any kind, including nectar and rotting fruit. • Flies use other hairs to tell them when they touch something. These hairs bend when touched. • The eyes of a fly do not have eyelids, so flies rub their eyes with their feet to keep them clean.
