  3. Active Listening • Encourage person – “Do you want to talk about it…?” Look at the person talking, show interest by nodding and facial expressions. • When there is a pause.. Show that you are interested, Ask a question, ”Then what happened” • Summarize what the person says, Make sure you heard them correctly as to what upset them, or excited them. • DO NOT GO ON TO YOUR OWN PROBLEM and ignore theirs.

  5. How to handle situations Passive Aggressive Using “you” messages to blame the other person Interrupting, being sarcastic Making fun of someone’s feelings, Always wanting your way. Yelling, not talking, physical force, finger pointing • Hoping the other person guesses your feelings • Always listening but not talking • Criticizing yourself, always apologizing • Mumbling, fidgetling, • Always giving in.

  6. What are you? Assertive • Using “I” Messages • Actively listening • Understanding the persons feelings • Expressing appreciation and respect. • Seeking a compromise • Speaking confidently, clearly, making eye contact, showing interest

  7. Cooperation • Working alongside someone to accomplish the same end result Body Language Includes: Posture, gestures, facial expressions, and body movements

  8. Compromise • The willingness of each person to give up something in order to reach agreement • Give and Take • Shows respect and the importance of the other person

  10. Sportsmanship • Fairness • Respect • Losing Gracefully • Win with the class • Stay positive • Make fun • Bragging • Throwing a fit • Putting others down • Being negative

  11. Empathy vs Sympathy • Recognizing the feelings and emotions of others • Responding appropriately • is the perception, understanding, and reaction to the distress or need of another • Usually knowing how they feel from a personal experience
