  2. Before you read • What do you think the title means? • What do the graphics on the cover suggest? • Do you predict this book will be fiction or non-fiction? Why?

  3. Chapter 1 - comprehension • Who is selected to leave the orphanage and go into a foster home? • How does Jerry feel about leaving the orphanage? • What does Bud do to help Jerry overcome his fear of the unknown?

(worried) • What does Bud do to help Jerry overcome his fear of the unknown? (He cheers him up by telling him it will be easy going and fun)

  5. Chapter 1 – discussion/journaling • Bud says “you start to be a real adult” at about age six.” Do you agree with him? Why or why not? • In what ways is Bud like an adult, and in what ways is he still a child? Give specific examples from the text to support your statement.

  6. Stop and think • After reading this far, what inferences can you draw about Bud’s past? Jot down a couple and see if continued reading finds them true. • Based on this chapter, write 1-2 predictions about what will happen in the next chapter or two. By the middle of the book?

Concept mapping • As you read create a concept map. • Choose one of these words for the center of your map: home, loss, fear, kindness, family, caring • As you read, add circles connected to the hub circle to jot down specific characters and events that show how the concept is developed. • At the end of the novel when your map is complete write a summary statement. Decide if this statement would be a theme of the novel.
