  2. What is Ecology? The branch of science concerned with the interrelation of organisms and their environment.

  3. So what’s an ecosystem? All the interacting parts of a biological community and its environment. …and there are several types of ecosystems

  4. In the ocean…

  5. In the woods…

  6. In the desert…

  7. In the marsh…

  8. Ecosystems: Always Natural? Ecosystems can be created by human beings and are artificial. What are some advantages of artificial systems? Are there disadvantages?

  9. In any ecosystem there are… Food, other living things like plants, animals, fungi, bacteria; also disease and predators Biotic Factors (Alive) Abiotic Factors Environmental factors like Climate/Weather, habitat, temperature, light intensity, soil type, acidity, availability of water, (Not Alive) Can you name any? Come up with a list of factors in your groups!

  10. Remember what a food chain is? Draw any food chain you can think of. What does it look like? What’s in it? So, it’s basicallya single linear example of feeding interactions, right? I know you knew that!

  11. So if this is a food chain, Then what do you think is a food web? A food web is a collection of food chains, a more complex and realistic view of an ecosystem.

  12. Habitats • They are homes, large ecosystems for multiple interconnected food webs • For you, for me, the birds and the bees! • Place like forests, deserts, oceans and seas • Tundra, urban, arctic • Hell, heaven…

  13. So we put it all together and… (YIKES!!!)

  14. So why must we understand ecology? • What do you think? • What do we do? • What can we do? • Can we do more?
