    16. What Explains Colombias Low Participation in the Top Entrepreneurship and Innovation Journals? Very few PhDs in the country: Brazil produces 1 PhD for every 70,000 inhabitants. In Chile, the ratio is 1 to every 140,000, and in Colombia, its 1 for every 700,000. Very few faculty members with PhDs: It is estimated that in Colombia only 1.4 percent of faculty have doctoral degrees and only 16 percent have masters degrees. Low faculty salaries: In Colombia, faculty salaries are relatively low, so most professors work as independent consultants outside of Academia to complement their faculty salaries.

Conclusions The countrys policy for developing local doctoral programs is producing positive benefits as observed by the increasing number of Colombian publications in the top basic science journals. The work of Colombian researchers and scientists is still poorly represented in the top innovation and entrepreneurship journals.
