Assessment • What are some different types of assessments?
Pre-Test • Why would you give students a pre-test? • To determine the strengths and weakness of students • To plan for appropriate rigor • You have to know where you are to determine the finish line.
What is Formative Assessment? • a range of formal and informal assessment procedures used by teachers during the learning process in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve student attainment • Most often, informal assessment are used to determine if students are understanding content (asking questions) • Important to be sure students understand a concept before advancing
Summative Assessment (Post-Test) -After a period of work, e.g. a unit for two weeks, the learner sits for a test and then the teacher marks the test and assigns a score. The test aims to summarize learning up to that point. The test may also be used for diagnostic assessment to identify any weaknesses and then build on that using formative assessment
Knowledge Based Assessment • Assess student knowledge of a specific content
What is project based learning? • Project Based Learning is the use of in-depth and rigorous classroom projects to facilitate learning and to assess student competence. It provides students with complex tasks based on challenging questions that involve the students' investigative, problem solving, decision making skills.
Why Project Based Learning? • Today’s students, more than ever, often find school to be boring and meaningless. In PBL, students are active, not passive; a project engages their hearts and minds, and provides real-world relevance for learning.
Why performance based/pbl? • Promotes hands-on collaborate activities • Shows what students KNOW and CAN DO • Provides feedback to students on strengths and weaknesses.
PBL Activity • Pair up in groups of no more than 3 people in the same program area or cluster as yourself • Identify a project that you will use in your classroom instruction • Develop a brief scoring rubric to evaluate students. • Share your project
