Important Dates • February 5 – First schedule and reflection due to University Supervisor • February 10 – Deadline to apply for graduation for May 2012 (www.graduationservices.ilstu.edu) • February 11 & April 14 – APT exam dates • February 28 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. – Spring Educator’s Career Fair in Bone Student Center • April 22 – Last day of student teaching • April 27 – All Student Teaching work is due on Live Text • May 11 – Graduation (Friday night with the College of Arts and Sciences)

  3. Your University Supervisor and You • The supervisor’s job is to provide with you additional feedback and guidance throughout the student teaching experience. • Let the supervisor know if issues arise during your student teaching. • Always acknowledge receipt of supervisor e-mails.

  4. Frequently Asked Questions • What is the purpose of student teaching? • Hone skills you’ve learned previously. • Learn skills that cannot be taught at the University under the mentorship of a professional educator. • Develop an understanding of what being a professional educator is all about.

Frequently Asked Questions • Can I miss any days of student teaching? • You can miss 3 days for illness and 2 for professional reasons. • You need to talk to your CT ahead of time as to what the procedure is in terms of letting him or her know if you are going to miss school due to illness. You are responsible for making sub plans if you’re teaching that day. • You must arrange absences for professional reasons ahead of time. Your CT has the right to not allow you to go.

  6. Frequently Asked Questions • How do I work my way into the classroom? • How you “take over” the classes will be up to you and your CT. In most cases, student teachers start by co-teaching with the CT as a support teacher, move to the lead teacher role, and then finally handle the classroom themselves. • Other strategies include taking over 1 class at a time, doing different parts of classes to start out with, etc. • How much teaching am I expected to do? • You must carry a full load for at least 3 weeks. Most student teachers in biology carry the full load for 6-7 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions • What do I do if I finish up my teaching before April 22? • If you and your CT agree that your teaching time ends before the 22nd, you should take advantage of that time to observe other teachers, shadow administrators, etc. • What do I do if I’m having problems with my CT? • Contact your University Supervisor right away if there are any issues at your placement.

  13. Teacher Performance Assessment • Used to show readiness of novice teachers • STT must describe, analyze, and evaluate the teaching of a series of 3-5 science lessons (known as a “learning segment”) • Consists of 4 tasks
