The 1st Meeting organized by Secretaria de Políticas e Programas de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento (SEPED-MCT) and SSC-LBA took place on August 12, 2005, at the University of Brasília. The event gathered key participants from MCT and EMBRAPA to discuss the need for enhanced collaboration between the GEOMA and LBA programs. Central themes included land cover change and human dimensions in both programs, emphasizing the importance of cooperation to address environmental issues and develop effective policies for the Amazon region.

Need to establish mechanisms for interactions between the programs. SEPED should mediate this interaction • LBA and GEOMA have particular characteristics what reinforce the importance of the two programs • Need to support both programs and to identify where they can be complimentary, looking for collaboration to fill gaps. • The theme of land cover / land use change is central for both programs with different focus.
Human dimension theme is present in both programs but needs a better structure. • GEOMA responds also to the government demand of diagnose of environmental problems • Personnel trained by LBA could be engaged in the GEOMA. • GEOMA represents an important connection among MCT Institutes
2nd Meeting • Date:12th Sept. 2005, at the MCT • Organizers: SEPED and SCUP – MCT • LBA participants: Mercedes Bustamante, Luiz Martinelli, Carlos Nobre, Bertha Becker, Ima Vieira, Tatiana Sá • Initiative to elaborate the policy for Science and Technology in the Amazon region • Definition of aspects that should be included in a proposal for the Fundo transversal para a Amazônia • The proposal includes some aspects that could stimulate the interactions between GEOMA and LBA (e.g. case study BR-163).
3rd. Meeting • Meeting of the GEOMA Superior Committee • One of the topics – Interactions with LBA • Planning of the meeting with LBA and Geoma SSC members for the first week of December
