  2. Geography • Location: Northeast corner of Africa • Size: Approximately 997,740 sq. km • Capital: Cairo • Major River: The Nile • Deserts: Sahara, Libyan, Nubian

  3. Climate The ancient Egyptians endured a hot, dry climate with very little annual rainfall.

  4. The Gift of the Nile The Nile provided: • Water for crops • Fertile soil • Food • A water highway • Papyrus The Nile River made it possible for the ancient Egyptian civilization to flourish.

  6. Society In ancient Egypt, your social class was determined by your job. Most of the population was at the bottom. The pharaoh, at the top, was not only the king and ruler but was also considered to be a god.
