  4. Aims • Learn how to pronounce the Māori language correctly; • Learn a simple greeting;

  5. He Whakaaro The Māori voice (reo) which is conveyed on the breath (hā) of a person and comes from what is known as the seat of the emotions (aro). From here it journeys upwards to the lungs (pukapuka), up to the throat (korokoro) to the voice box (pūkorokoro), on to the tongue (arero) and out of the mouth to produce voice, language (reo), talk (kōrero) and conversation (kōrerorero). The ‘hā’ eminating from the ‘aro’ is a person’s ‘aroha’.

  11. Pronunciation Tips • If a vowel has a macron, talk normal if not, pronounce vowels and relative letters a little quicker. whānau mai maunga māmā 2. Pronounce each vowel sound even if it is blended with another āe ei au oa a e e i a u o a • If a macron is on the first vowel then emphasise this vowel and roll off on to the next one. tōku ingoa whānau kāinga ‘tō ku’ not ‘took ku’ ‘whānau’ not ‘funno’ ‘i ngoa’ not ‘ing oa’ ‘kā i nga’ not ‘kai ing a’ • Māori is spoken phrase by phrase. I whānau mai au, i Papaioea not ‘I whānau mai au i, Papaioea’
