  4. Our Purpose Provides an opportunity for new employees to become acclimated to the campus culture by sharing information that will be useful in transitioning to their position, department, and Dickinson College.

  5. Objectives By the end of this session, you will have a(n): • Firm understanding of Dickinson College’s culture and history • Appropriate level of information to complete all new employee documentation • Increased awareness of the campus community including facilities and departments • Opportunity to meet with your supervisor and/or representatives from your department • Comprehension of key institutional policies • Opportunity to address questions that will support your transition into the Dickinson College community

  6. Group Activity Break up into groups of two (2) Each person takes one (1) minute to introduce themselves Items to address should include: • Name • Where you live • Campus department • Interests • Each person will introduce their partner when we get back as a whole group

Historical Facts • Dickinson College was founded in 1773 and was the first college chartered in the United States on September 9, 1783 by Dr. Benjamin Rush. • Dr. Rush described Carlisle as the “outpost of westward expansion”. • Zatae Longsdorff arrived at Dickinson in 1884 and became the institution’s first female student. • Donors of the college include President Thomas Jefferson, Vice President Aaron Burr, and Secretary of State James Madison. • Graduates of Dickinson College include President James Buchanan and Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney. • The Dickinsonian, founded in 1872, is among the oldest ongoing newspapers in Pennsylvania.

Dickinson Figures • 41 Major Fields of Study and 9 Special Programs • Approximately 2,300 full-time students coming from 40 states and 30 countries (over 100 international students) • Remains in the Top 50 of the national liberal arts colleges according to the 2006 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” (U.S. News and World Report) • Global education programming currently consists of 32 programs that take place over six continents • Average SAT score for admitted students is 1324

Campus Operations • Oversees the day to day operations of the auxiliary enterprises of the College. • Location: Throughout the Campus • Includes the following departments: • Bookstore • Children’s Center • Conferences and Special Events (CASE) • Dining Services • Facilities Management • FAS Mail Center • Student Mail Room • Service Center

  13. Academic Affairs • A four-year program of study in the liberal arts. The academic calendar consists of both fall and spring semesters with an optional summer term. • Location: Throughout the Campus • Quick Facts • 209 Faculty • 94% have earned a Ph.D. or other terminal degree • 11:1 Student to Faculty Ratio • Includes the following: • Arts and Humanities • Social Sciences • Natural Sciences • Minors and Certificates

Enrollment Management and College Relations • The mission of the division of Enrollment Management & College Relations is to build, support and maintain a lifelong connection to Dickinson by developing relationships between and among prospective and current students, parents, alumni and faculty. • Location: Throughout the Campus • Includes the following departments: • Admissions • Athletics • Career Center • College Relations • Financial Aid • Institutional Research • Summer Programs

Library and Information Services • Provides research and technical support to all Dickinson students and employees. • Location: Waidner-Spahr Library and South College • Includes the following departments: • Library Services • Academic Technology Services • Institutional Systems • Infrastructure Systems • User Services

Development • Our primary purpose is to manage and build relationships with alumni, parents, friends, foundations and corporations, with the intent of increasing interest in financially supporting the college. • Location: 50 Moreland Avenue • Includes the following departments: • Development • Leadership Giving • Annual Giving • Corporate and Foundation Relations • Development Administrative Services

Student Life • Focuses primarily on the development of students’ social, emotional and educational growth as they strive to fully realize the aims of a liberal arts education. • Location: Holland Union Building (HUB) • Includes the following departments: • Counseling and Learning Support Services • Greek Life • Health Services • Religious Life and Community Service • Residential Life • Student Activities • Dean of Students • Office of Diversity Initiatives • Public Safety

Financial Operations • Services within the division include: • Student Accounts (Tuition, loans & cashier’s office) • Accounts Payable • Payroll (Staff & Student) • Grants • Credit cards/Purchasing cards/Purchase orders • Planning & Budget • Endowment & Investment Management • General Accounting

Employment Policies and Services • Holidays • Seven (7) Fixed and Two (2) Floating Holidays • Work the Scheduled Day Before and After the Holiday • Christmas Day to New Year’s Day – Normally Paid College Holidays • Vacations • Vacation time to be taken between July 1 and June 30 • Vacation time can be taken in quarter hour increments • Administrators – 23 days • Support Staff – 15 days (20 days after 10 years of service) • Sick Leave • Ten (10) days per year

Employment Policies and Services • Responsible Use of Electronic Communications and Network Services • Email and documents considered intellectual property of the College • College reserves the right to monitor all communication including Internet and email • Use caution when drafting electronic communications

Employment Policies and Services • Expectations • Support Staff Probationary Period: Three (3) Months • Administrative Probationary Period: Six (6) Months • An evaluation by your supervisor will be performed at the conclusion of the probationary period • Performance Evaluations • Provides ongoing feedback on an employee’s overall performance • Allows managers to provide clear expectations • Written evaluations occur at least one (1) time per year

  26. Employment Policies and Services • Retirement • To Attain Retired Status, you must be at least age 60 with at least 10 years of service or 20 years of service have reached the age of 55 • Medical coverage is available through the COBRA program • Eligible for early retirement from 52 to 62

Employment Policies and Services • Workers Compensation • Public Safety, Dining Services, and Facilities Management personnel are to file a report within their department • Other employees contact your supervisor and HR Services • Pay Calendar • Support staff: Biweekly on alternate Fridays (26 pays/year) • Administrators: Semimonthly – 15th and last business day (24 pays per year)

Banner – Creating “A Unified Digital Campus” • Banner is a campus-wide initiative which has integrated our administrativeprocesses and technologies in the following areas: • Finance • Development • Student and Faculty Administration • Financial Aid • Human Resources • Payroll • The creation of web-basedaccess provides employees self-service capabilities to do their jobs and view/change personal information (address, W-2, etc).
