  1. October 20, 2008 Sustainability Partnerships

  2. EPA Energy Star Healthcare Partner • NYU Langone Medical Center has joined the Partner program and completed the first key steps toward applying for an Energy Star award in late 2008. Energy Star Resources will assist NYU Medical to: • Prepare an Energy Strategy for the Future • Establish a comprehensive energy management program using ENERGY STAR's Guidelines for Energy Management. • Benchmark energy performance with Portfolio Manager. • Participate in the ENERGY STAR Challenge. • Become an ENERGY STAR Change a Light Pledge Driver. • Receive training through our Recommended Workshops for Healthcare. • Purchase ENERGY STAR qualified products to save energy throughout the Campus. • Design new or expansion facilities to be energy efficient. • Plan for use of on-site renewable energy

  3. EPA Climate Leaders • Climate Leaders is an EPA industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop comprehensive climate change strategies. • NYU Langone Medical Center will commit to reducing our impact on the global environment by completing a corporate-wide inventory of our greenhouse gas emissions based on a quality management system, setting aggressive reduction goals, and annually reporting their progress to EPA. • Through our participation in this program, NYU Langone Medical Center will create a credible record of our accomplishments and receive EPA recognition as corporate environmental leaders.

  4. EPA Combined Heat & Power Partnership NYU Langone Medical Center is exploring the feasibility of onsite cogeneration, or Combined Heat & Power, and is moving forward to evaluate qualifications for potential design engineering partners through an RFQ process. The EPA CHP Partnership described below will be a valuable resource to the NYU Langone Medical Administration and project team in working to evaluate design elements going forward. “Combined heat and power (CHP), also known as cogeneration, is an efficient, clean, and reliable approach to generating power and thermal energy from a single fuel source. By installing a CHP system designed to meet the thermal and electrical base loads of a facility, CHP can greatly increase the facility's operational efficiency and decrease energy costs. At the same time, CHP reduces the emission of greenhouse gases, which contribute to global climate change.” The CHP Partnership is a voluntary program seeking to reduce the environmental impact of power generation by promoting the use of CHP. The Partnership works closely with energy users, the CHP industry, state and local governments, and other clean energy stakeholders to facilitate the development of new projects.

  5. EPA WaterSense Partner • WaterSense, a partnership program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, makes it easy for Americans to save water and protect the environment. • NYU Langone Medical Center has pledged to purchase products bearing the WaterSense label and to build more effective controls over costs and use of water and wastewater. • Sustainability initiatives tied to the EPA program are built on these two key questions: How Does Excessive Water Use Affect Water Quality? What Are the Environmental Benefits of Using Water Efficiently? • Between increasing demand and shrinking supply, our water resources are strained across the country. However, by using water more efficiently we can preserve water resources for the future.

  6. US Department of Energy“Energy Smart Hospitals” • From the DOE Program announcement, July 2008: “Hospitals today find themselves at the nexus of two critical pressure-points: healthcare and energy. Within the healthcare industry, the constraints of rising costs, lower reimbursements, an aging population, and outdated facilities are intersecting with burgeoning energy pressures such as growing demand, rising costs, and increasing concerns about carbon emissions and energy reliability.” • To support hospitals in addressing both these challenging trends, the Department of Energy (DOE) has created a comprehensive initiative – EnergySmart Hospitals – and its centerpiece, the industry-driven Hospital Energy Alliance.

  7. US Department of Energy“Energy Smart Hospitals” EnergySmart Hospitals goals: • Promote 20% improved efficiency in existing buildings and 30% in new construction over current standards • Increase efficient and renewable energy applications in hospitals • Reduce energy use and operating costs • Create healthier healing and work environments • Maximize successful hospital upgrades and design strategies • Ensure reliable backup power during disasters • Improve environmental performance …“Through these efforts, DOE will provide the resources, tools, and strategies that our nation's hospitals must have to identify clear pathways to cost and energy savings through efficient and renewable energy technology applications for both new and existing facilities.

  8. Practice Greenhealth • Practice Greenhealth is the nation’s leading membership and networking organization for institutions in the healthcare community that have made a commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly practices. Members include hospitals, healthcare systems, businesses and other stakeholders engaged in the greening of healthcare to improve the health of patients, staff and the environment. • Practice Greenhealth offers a wide variety of tools, educational opportunities, and services aimed at greening the healthcare industry. These include: • Webinars • Healthcare Clean Energy Exchange • Training for Sustainability Professionals • Waste Data Tracking Tool

  9. Green Guide For Healthcare • The Green Guide for Health Care™, is the healthcare sector’s “first quantifiable sustainable design toolkit integrating enhanced environmental and health principles and practices into the planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance of their facilities.” • The Guide provides the healthcare sector with a voluntary, self-certifying metric toolkit of best practices that designers, owners, and operators can use to guide and evaluate their progress towards high performance healing environments. • Issues such as 24/7 operations, energy and water use intensity, chemical use, infection control requirements and formidable regulatory requirements can pose significant obstacles to the implementation of currently accepted sustainability protocols. • Furthermore, “it is appropriate that guidelines customized for the health care sector reflect the collective fundamental mission to protect and enhance individual and community health, and that those guidelines acknowledge the intrinsic relationship between the built environment and ecological health.”

  10. The New York Energy Consumers Council • NYU Medical has been a member of the NYECC (formerly the Energy Buyers Forum) for over ten years. Through the organization, critical intervention efforts in rate cases, restructuring and environmental proceedings at the NYS Public Service Commission and the NY Independent System Operator (NYISO) are coordinated and funds for intervention are effectively shared. History of the Organization • “New York Energy Consumers Council (NYECC) is the largest energy customer advocacy organization in New York State. Their includes a half-century of successful regulatory intervention as the Owners’ Committee on Electric Rates, Inc. and nearly two decades of education, regulatory intervention, and members’ representation as the New York Energy Buyers Forum, Inc. Members of NYECC represent a broad spectrum of energy buyers, including hospitals, universities, financial institutions, residential and commercial property managers, public benefit corporations, energy service companies, and energy consumers or groups of consumers in Con Edison’s service territory.”

  11. PlaNYC • In December 2006, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg challenged New Yorkers to generate ideas for achieving 10 key goals for the city's sustainable future. • The result is the “most sweeping plan to enhance New York's urban environment in the city's modern history.” Focusing on the five key dimensions of the city's environment - land, air, water, energy, and transportation – New York has set the goal of reducing its citywide carbon emissions by 30% below 2005 levels. • PlaNYC puts forth a strategy to reduce the City’s greenhouse gas footprint, while also accommodating a population growth of nearly one million, and improving the City’s infrastructure and environment. • Among other initiatives, NYU Langone Medical will actively participate in the PLANYC annual Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory to help track progress toward the Campus and Citywide goals simultaneously.
