    7. 7 Seals of Assessment Achievement & Excellence PURPOSE: To recognize programs that have demonstrated significant progress with assessing student learning To promote best practices in assessment by sharing practical experiences To encourage programs to showcase program-level achievements and to adjust curricula when appropriate.

    8. 8 Seal of Assessment Achievement Academic programs earning this recognition have demonstrated in their annual report that learning outcomes have been assessed through two or more methods, and findings have been discussed among the faculty.

    9. 9 Seal of Assessment Excellence Academic programs earning this recognition have demonstrated a thorough implementation of assessment plan(s), the reporting of meaningful assessment data, the discussion of findings among faculty and perhaps students, and the use of findings to showcase student achievements and to make curricular adjustments.

    10. 10 The Seal Recognition Approach Not tied to monetary awards or resources. Reason: Funds best used for start-up engagement with assessment. Unlimited number of awards each year. Reason: Recognizes ALL faculty for their efforts, not just one or two units. Two tiers of recognition Reason: Recognizes initial progress (achievement) while encouraging a higher standard (excellence). Tom Slides 10 - 12Tom Slides 10 - 12

    12. 12 ITS YOUR TURN! Youre on the University Assessment Committee! Take 10 minutes to review the short assessment report. Determine whether the report meets the highlighted criteria for Achievement or Excellence. Share your thoughts with a neighbor for 5 minutes.

    13. 13 Assessing the Seals: How Successful? Nearly all recipients include their Seal on the Web. Numerous appreciative email notes from recipients. Accredited programs scrambling to improve reports to earn Seal of Excellence. Deans competing for most Seals within their colleges, encouraging departments. Increase in requests for OAA consulting. More UAC feedback addressed in latest reports. Increase in # of Seal recipients from Year 1 to Year 2. Joe 13-15Joe 13-15

    14. 14 Nurturing a Culture of Evidence Assessment start-up mini-grants, consulting, outside experts, conferences. Tied to 7-year Program Review process. Curriculum change forms (add/drop/change) require assessment justifications. Peer feedback and constructive advice from the UAC. Institutional recognition for using assessment to improve learning (the Seals).

    15. 15 NAU Assessment Fair TheSixth Annual Assessment Fair saw: 78presenters including students, staff, faculty, and administrators 44poster presentations displaying data on retention, student learning, student satisfaction, teaching effectiveness, and other assessment topics

    16. 16 Encouraging Genuine Faculty Engagement (i.e. buy-in) Trust faculty expertise: countless pedagogical approaches to achieve outcomes. Encourage embedded assessments that are meaningful, useful, and manageable. Coupling of direct and indirect evidence (triangulation) Do not rush the start-up process (e.g. 2 years from 1st plan to 1st Seal) Embed assessment process in university structure (and inform the faculty about it!). Personal consulting and workshops: Listen to concerns and address them respectfully. Tom 16-17Tom 16-17

    17. 17 Next Steps? Rolling out a new Student Learning & Curriculum Design (SLCD) project: Full-year curricular mapping process based on evidence. Improve criteria on UAC rubrics. Target weakest aspects of program assessment for consulting. Scale back the requirement for annual assessment reports(?); 2-year cycle?
