5. HISTORY The University ages almost four decades now, thus making it among the oldest Central University in India. NEHU initially started operating from rented spaces but soon went on to acquire two properties, one at Nongthymmai and another at Bijni. The University operated at these spaces till 2004. In 2005 the University gradually started to move into its own campus of 1225 acres at Umshing. Since then, the University has developed in its campus many research centers and state-of-the-art facilities.

7. INFRASTRUCTURE The infrastructure at North-Eastern Hill University is arguably the best in north-eastern India. It consistently has received praises and accolades for its superior infrastructure. Situated in a geographically challenging location, NEHU develops to date rapidly. Library An ever-updating library at the permanent campus aims at providing all necessary books while keeping up with the trends of changing studies and sciences. The central library at the campus was set up by the Ministry of Development. The library currently houses 230,000 books, 38,000 bound periodicals and has subscriptions to national and international journals and papers. Student’s teachers and staff are permitted access to the library.

8. Hostel A sum total of 23 hostels are active throughout the campus. Of the 23 hostels, eleven are allocated to women and twelve to men. All of these 23 hostels have respective teachers and professors as their wardens. Each hostel roughly has a housing capacity of 90 to 100 students. However, few hostels can only house as many as 50 students. Sports Department NEHU does not take sports lightly. Therefore the University provides ample space for sports. It also has dedicated coaches for football and Basketballl. The University organizes many sporting events from time to time. The competitive events include sports such as Cricket, Football, Hockey, boxing, Judo, Best Physique, Weight lifting, Athletics, Table Tennis, Badminton, Chess, Basketballl, and Volleyball.
