  7. Accommodations and modifications are located in Section 7 of the IEP. We are legally required to comply with any accommodation listed.

  8. Modifications-Are changes to what a student is expected to learn. Grade level curriculum may need significant adjustment(s) to meet the needs of the student. A modification is an actual change in the work or how it is completed.

  9. These students cannot work at the same grade level as his or her typical grade level peer. If grade level or course requirements are not realistic for a student the IEP team may need to modify the expectations.

  10. Accommodations-are changes in the way a student is expected to learn. They are changes in classroom procedures but they do not change what is measured.

  11. Accommodations provide a student with equal access to learning. Accommodations are how a student accesses the equal opportunity.

  12. Accommodations can be provided for:-instructional methods -assignments and assessments-learning environment-time demands-special communication systems

  13. -behavior issues-mobility needs-visual and hearing needs-health concerns

  14. Examples of accommodations--Extended time to complete a task or test-Large print books-Copies of lecture notes-Highlighting main ideas or key words

  15. -Summary of lesson-Break long assignments into smaller segments-Uncluttered tests-Books on tape-Assignment notebook-Small group setting

  16. -Braille-Special communications systems-Peer support for notetaking-Lab sheets with highlighted directions-Tape record lectures

  17. Group WorkThree problems to brainstorm and determine what accommodations could be provided.

  18. Learning Problem #1Students have difficulty finding the main ideas or knowing what is important to remember in what they are reading.

  19. Learning Problem # 2Students have trouble keeping track of their assignments.

  20. Learning Problem # 3Students have trouble following the ideas during the lecture or discussion.

  21. To summarize:Modifications are changes made to WHAT students are expected to learn.Accommodations are made to the WAY students learn and HOW they are tested.
