  16. Types of Plays • Histories • Tragedies • Comedies • Choose one to learn more about each

  17. The Histories • Wrote throughout his career • Examples • Richard III • Henry VIII (the play) justified the Tudor ascension to the English throne after the War of the Roses

  18. What were the Histories • The Histories were the stories of the King of England and Parliament to help preserve the knowledge of history. • Like modern day historical movies that give perspective that otherwise would not be there

  19. Richard III • This drama is one of the great history themed plays by William Shakespeare. The play is dominated by Richard depicted as the evil hunchbacked Duke of Gloucester who becomes King Richard III through a series of terrible acts. Richard kills off his enemies, his kinsmen, his wife and most of his supporters. The Wars of the Roses between the Houses of York and Lancaster culminate in the Battle of Bosworth and the defeat of Richard by the Duke of Richmond, who became Henry VII, crying out "My kingdom for a horse.” Go Back to Plays

  20. The Tragedies • These were the most famous of Shakespeare’s plays • Romeo and Juliet • Julius Caesar • Macbeth • Hamlet • When Done click HERE

  21. Romeo and Juliet • A boy, Romeo, and a girl, Juliet, from rivaling families in Verona, Italy meet in unlikely circumstances. They get married with help from friar and nurse. Romeo’s best friend is killed by Juliet's cousin and Romeo kills him. For this Romeo is banished. Juliet takes a potion that makes her seem like she is dead, but she is not. Romeo hears that she is dead and visits her one last time before taking his life. Juliet wakes up to see her love dead and also kills herself.

  22. Julius Caesar Julius Caesar is about the end of the great Caesar’s reign. He is warned to “beware the Ides of March”. He doesn’t and is assassinated in the senate thanks to the plotting of Brutus(“et tu brute”) and Cassius. A power struggle soon emerges and there is a civil war over who will rule the Roman Empire now. Brutus and Cassius eventually get defeated by Mark Antony who restores the peace in the nation. Mark Antony also has the speech “Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears.”

  23. Macbeth • 3 witches tell Macbeth that he will become the next king of Scotland, where this play is located. Macbeth tells his wife, Lady Macbeth who determines that they must kill the King. They do. Then they both are haunted by the murder that they committed and are haunted different ways. Lady Macbeth goes nuts and can’t get the blood off her hands, she eventually throws herself off a tower. Macbeth become obsessed with his power. He learns that only man not of normal birth will be able to kill him. He then kills his rivals to gain their lands and support. Eventually a rebellion arises against the King and he sits on his throne, waiting for them. Macduff, who was born through C-Section, leads the rebels who disguise themselves as trees and attack the palace and eventually kill Macbeth.

  24. Hamlet A Danish prince, whose father was murdered, tries to avenge his father. He learns that his uncle actually is the one who killed his father through the famous play within a play scene. He then goes mad (on purpose?) and deliver's his “to be or not to be” monologue. His girlfriend also goes mad after her fathers death, and drowns herself. Macbeth goes mad at her death, Her brother blames Macbeth, and an epic showdown occurs in the last Act. In the end everyone is dead, including Hamlet.

  33. A MidsummerNightsDream This play revolves around the adventures of four young lovers, a group of amateur actors and their interactions with the fairies who inhabit a moonlit forest. The story takes place during Midsummer and is comically complex. Romantic intrigues are confused and complicated still further by entering the forest where Oberon, the King of the Fairies and his Queen, Titania, preside. Other visitors to the enchanted forest include Bottom the weaver and his friends Snug, Snout, Quince and Flute the amateur dramatists who want to rehearse their terrible but hilarious version of the play Pyramus and Thisbe. Everyone falls into an enchanted sleep where the Lovers fall in Love with each other, and Bottom has the head of a Donkey. The Story ends when everyone leaves changed because of it.

  39. Romeo and JulietComparison between Movie and Play Similarities Differences They are set in different times They fight with guns named swords rather than actual swords • Same script, meaning that the words are the same in the play as they are in the movie • Same basic setting, just time difference, and Verona Italy becomes Verona Beach NOTE: The movie appeals better to many students because it is easier for them to understand the basic story.

  40. 10 Things I Hate About You • http://youtu.be/pkd0phXBETY

The Taming of the ShrewMovie: 10 things… and the Play Similarities Differences Plot: In the play they are talking about marriage, but the movie they are talking just about dating 10 things is often easier to understand than the play is because it is focused to the audience of teenagers versus an adult audience from the late 1500’s. • Characters • Shrew: Katherine(p); Kat (m) • Tamer: Petruccio(p); Patrick (m) • Plot • Father wants the eldest daughter to be “chosen” first (p) = play (m) = movie

  45. Romeo and JulietvsShakespeare in Love Similarities Differences This movie is a love story that has Shakespearian elements drawn from it Characters are not the same, it is a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the performance of Romeo and Juliet Original play name is Romeo and Ethel, the Pirates Daughter • There are many plot elements that are in the movie as well as the play • For example: the balcony scene is reenacted in the movie just like the play • Characters • Names (in the movie) are suggested by fellow actors and playwrights, because he has writers block and his names are not any good
