  3. Describe Herot Herot is a spacious place of the Danes, it is a beautiful place and was a place of culture and joy for the Danes.

  4. Grendel is cursed by God. He is a descendant from Cain, the brother who murdered Abel, signifying that Grendel is evil. (Lines 20-24) 2. What is the significance of Grendel being descended from Cain

  5. Herot symbolized a place of peace, happiness, joy, and success. After it symbolizes defeat, helplessness and sorrow. 3. What had Herot symbolized before the coming of Grendel? After?

  7. 4. Why is Hrothgar’s watchman concerned about the arrival of Beowulf and his men? A: Hrothgar’s watchmen are concerned with the arrival of Beowulf and his men because Beowulf arrived ashore without any communication to the Danes letting them know about Beowulf’s arrival, as well as Beowulf and his men arriving with weapons and armor.

  8. 5. How does the lieutenant recognize Beowulf as a hero? A: He recognizes him as a hero because at first when he arrived he saw them with weapons and armor. He thought of them as a threat as first but then realized King Hrothgar accepted an offer from Beowulf to kill Grendel and the lieutenant finds out his bravery and courage

  9. 6. What do Beowulf’s words and actions tell you about his personality? A: His words and actions tell us that he is a leader and strong. Examples of this are on lines 212-214.

  10. 7. What are Beowulf’s thoughts as he waits for Grendel’s arrival? What does it reveal about the beliefs of the Anglo-Saxon society? A: His thoughts were in line 253-254“God must decide who will given the death’s cold grip.” he thinks that if his time will come, there no corpse to prepare for his grave. The beliefs of the Anglo-Saxon society probably that the winner of a battle is decided by the gods. They also believe in burials, as stated in line 259 “There’ll be nothing to mourn over, no corpse to prepare. For its grave: Grendel will carry our bloody flesh to the moors, crunch on our bones and smear torn scraps of our skins on the walls of his den.

  12. Answers To Questions 8. Identify an example of foreshadowing in lines 269-305. • Lines 293-295 says “But fate that night intended Grendel to gnaw the broken bones of his last human supper.” 9. Find an example of personification in lines 269-305 and explain its meaning and significance. • In line 289 “And his heart laughed”. The author is saying that Grendel’s heart is laughing at the sight of all the sleeping soldiers from all the food that he will have.

Why does Beowulf wait, allowing Grendel to kill one of the Geats, before he attacks Grendel? • He waits because he wants to have the element of surprise so he can catch Grendel off guard. 11. Describe the battle between Beowulf and Grendel. • Grendel comes in the hall and Beowulf chooses to fight Grendel in a hand to hand combat. In the end, Beowulf tears off his arm and escapes wounded. He then dies from the bleeding.

Why can’t the other warriors come to Beowulf’s aid? • The other warriors were not strong enough and their weapons were no match for Grendel because they were enchanted. 13. How does Beowulf wound Grendel? • He rips off Grendel’s arm. 14. During the battle between Beowulf and Grendel, the reader learns Grendel’s thoughts and feelings. How does hearing about his fears and feelings affect your impression of the monster? • It affects our impression of him because we see that he is really scared and all he wanted to do was eat.

  16. 15. Describe the battle between Beowulf and Grendel’s Mother This battle’s whole purpose was for Grendel’s mother to avenge the death of her son. She killed Hrothgar’s closest friend to lure Beowulf in. In the end, Beowulf won by bearing a sword that could not be held by any ordinary man and used it to kill her.

  18. 17. How does Beowulf defeat her? This is an example of what literary device? Beowulf defeats Grendel’s mother by beheading her. This is an example of hyperbole (lines 489-497)

  19. 18. What does Beowulf do before he swims back to land? What do Hrothgar and the other warriors think happened? Beowulf retrieves the head of Grendel before he swims back to land. Hrothgar and the other warriors believe that Beowulf was killed by Grendel’s mother. (lines 543-546)

He takes Grendel’s head and the hilt of the giants’ jeweled sword; the rest of that ring-marked blade had dissolved in Grendel’s steaming blood, boiling even after his death. (lines 543-546)
