  3. Summary… On a snowy night Dr. David Henry is forced to deliver his twins with only the assistance of Nurse Caroline Gill. His Son Paul is born first, and he’s perfectly healthy. Phoebe comes as a surprise and it is immediately clear that she has down syndrome. Before his wife Norah awakes he asks Caroline to take phoebe away to an institution. Caroline instead, takes phoebe and tries to leave to Pittsburgh, but her car breaks down. She is able to get a ride with a trucker named Al Simpson. They make it to Pittsburgh where Caroline meets Dorothy and Leo March, who give her a job and a place to live. Meanwhile David and Norah are slowly drifting apart. Norah puts an announcement in the paper informing people of the “death” of her daughter. Caroline see’s the ad and contacts David informing him that she has Phoebe. They keep in contact for a while until Caroline feels that it is in the best interest of Phoebe for the two to stop communication. Caroline starts to see Al some then after he proposes three times, she finally excepts. Norah and David are now living two separate lives, and Norah has an affair. David shows up in Pittsburgh for an art show and Caroline agrees to meet him. Their conversation is cut short, David is devastated and flees to his parents’ abandoned house where he finds Rosemary, a pregnant teen. After the birth of her son, Jack, David invites Rosemary to live with him. A few years later Rosemary and Jack move out, and Norah and David get divorced. Paul is no longer living at home and David dies of a heart attack. Phoebe is love with Robert, another individual with down syndrome, and wants to live her own life but Caroline isn’t sure if that’s the safest thing. When Caroline heres that David has passed she finds Norah and tells her truth, then Norah and Paul meet Phoebe. Phoebe spends more time with her mother and brother, and attends her mothers wedding. Paul eventually takes Phoebe to their fathers grave.

  4. Conflicts… David lies to Norah about Phoebe • This first initial lie acts as a domino affect, and is the main reason David and Norah’s relationship dies.

  5. My thoughts • I enjoyed the book a lot, because it was like two stories in one that eventually came together. The first story told the life of a struggling family. The second of a mother and daughter that grow together and depend on each other. In the end both stories kind of mesh and become one. I thought that was what really made the story interesting.

  6. Recommendations… I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys dramatic, real life with a twist kind of stories.
