  1. How to take quotes from a book and write them in MLA style.

  3. Step 1: Label your notebook --4 pages Title your pages: What my character looks like What my character says/does What my character thinks/feels What others say about my character

  4. Step 2: choose your quotes Go through your book and find 3-5 book quotes for each way of knowing your character (12-20 quotes in all )

  5. Step 3: write down your quotes Each time you find a good quote that fits one of your categories – write it down on that page in your notebook

  6. Step 3: write down your quotes Don’t forget to write down the page number when you find a quote!

  7. You try! On which page would you write down the following quotes?

  8. I couldn’t stand the way my hair curled like crazy after swimming. She was small girl with shiny brown eyes, small hands and jeans that were getting too short.

  9. Christina always stopped on the side of the road to pick the tiny pink flowers that bloomed like bright snow every April. “I don’t like Christina”, said June; “She’s so smart she makes me feel like a dummy.”

  10. Step 4: put in quote marks and page numbers

  11. Quote marks Put “ ” around the beginning and end of each quote

  13. Notice Punctuation Goes INSIDE “I couldn’t stand the way my hair curled like crazy after swimming.”

  16. Dialogue Quote marks If your quote looks like this in the book: “She’s so smart she makes me feel like a dummy!” June said.

  17. Dialogue Quote marks You need to keep “ “ around the whole quote :“She’s so smart she makes me feel like a dummy!” June said.”

  18. Dialogue Quote marks AND you need to add single quote marks ‘ ‘ around any spoken words of dialogue:“ ‘ She’s so smart she makes me feel like a dummy! ’ June said.”
