Australopithecus (3.85 -2.95 million years ago) • This is the oldest group of early humans (walked upright) • Similar to chimpanzees (both ape and human characteristics) • Had a brain about a third the size of a human brain • Long curved fingers, small canine teeth- lived in both in trees and on the ground

  5. Homo Habilis (2.4- 1.4 million years ago) • Made crude, simple tools • Humanlike teeth, jaw, larger brain than Australopithecus, but has longer arms like an ape • No proof of art, fire building, or burial rituals

Homo Sapiens-Neanderthal (200,000- 28,000 Years ago) • Had brains the same size as modern humans, angled cheekbones, and a large nose • Used sophisticated tools, controlled fire, lived in shelters, made and wore clothing, hunted large animals, ate plants, made jewelry, and buried their dead with grave markers and offerings-even flowers
