  3. Frederick Douglass Frederick Douglass, the son of a white man and a black slave, was born in Maryland. His birth name was Frederick Washington Bailey. At age nine, Frederick was sent to Baltimore to care for the son on Mr. and Mrs. Auld. Frederick was taught to read by Mrs. Auld.

  4. Frederick Douglass In 1838 he escaped to New York City. He became involved with the American Anti-Slavery Society. He was a gifted writer and speaker. In 1945 he published his autobiography, “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass”.

  5. Frederick Douglass He began to publish an abolitionist newspaper “The North Star”. He became a great orator, speaking out against slavery. Douglass helped convince President Lincoln to make emancipation of the slaves one of the goals of the Civil War.
