  2. Clause: • A group of words containing both a subject and a verb.

  3. Independent clause: • A group of words containing both a subject and a verb, and conveying a complete thought. Example: Hippos live in west Africa.

  4. Subordinate (or dependent) clause: • A group of words containing both a subject and a verb, but not conveying a complete thought. Example: Although hippos live in west Africa,

Subordinating Conjunctions • Subordinating conjunctions distinguish independent from subordinate clauses. after how although if unless as inasmuch until as if in order that when as long as lest whenever as much as now that where as soon as provided (that) wherever as though since while because so that before than even if that even though though

  6. Simple sentences • One independent clause • Examples: The lion lounged The lion lounged languidly The lion lounged languidly beneath the luma-luma tree.

  7. Compound sentences • Composed of two or more independent clauses. • Examples: The lion lounged, and the hippo hid. The hippo hid deep in the river; he did not enjoy the mid-day sun.

  8. Complex sentences • Composed of at least one independent, and at least one subordinate clause. • Examples: When hippos hide from the mid-day sun, they dream of peanut butter. Because the lion lounged, he did not notice the fat gazelle.

  9. Compound-complex • Composed of at least two independent, and at least one subordinate clause. • Examples: While the hippo was hiding, the lion woke up; he sniffed the air for gazelle meat. When the gazelle heard the lion coming, he smiled, and he put on his hippo disguise.

  10. Identify these examples: The gazelle was fat because he ate lots of peanut butter. Fat gazelles walk slowly. When he is awake, it is easy for a lion to catch and kill a fat gazelle.

  11. More examples… • Lions do not eat hippos; they prefer lean meat. • Hippo meat is fattening, and it is less nutritious than peanut butter. • While wearing a hippo costume, a gazelle is hard to find, and a lion who can find a hidden gazelle is in for quite a treat.
