This document outlines the development of the North American Profile of the ISO 19115:2003 Metadata standard. Led by Harold Moellering from the Geography Department at Ohio State University, it aims to meet the metadata needs of various communities by enhancing interoperability and usability. Key aspects include requirements analysis, modification of existing UML, promotion of mandatory field options, extension and addition of code lists, and introducing multilingual registers to accommodate English, French, and potentially Spanish. The process aims to improve accessibility and user-friendliness of metadata for geospatial data.

Basic Metadata Functions • Locate particular Data in SDI • Evaluate characteristics of Data at site • Extract Database from site • Employ/Use Data to analyze problem
The goal for NAP CAN/CGSB 171.3-95 North American Profile Geospatial Metadata Based on ISO 19115/19139 USA CSDGM
Development Approach • Requirements analysis • Past experience with metadata standards implementation • Cross-table development (FGDC-ISO 19115) • Modified UML • Promote options to obligations • Extended codelists • Added codelists
North American Profile of ISO 19115:2003 Metadata (NAP-Metadata) • Selection of items from ISO19115:2003 • Promotion of optional fields to mandatory • Extension of code lists • Addition of values to existing code lists • Addition of code lists • Introduction of a multilingual register • Compliant to ISO19135:2005 onregisters • English and/et Français (and potentially Spanish) • Metadata items • Code lists • Register will be accessible on the Web • XML document • Web Services • Web Browser
