Design of a Sample Holder for Enhanced X-Ray Fluorescence Scanning of Brain Slices
This project aims to develop a specialized sample holder that enhances the resolution and accuracy of the rapid scanning x-ray fluorescence technique for brain slice analysis. Key challenges include preventing sample sliding during extended periods (at least 6 hours), accommodating varying sample dimensions, ensuring samples are transport-ready, and facilitating easy loading and cleaning. The design prioritizes metal-free components, compatibility with existing stages, and adheres to a defined budget. Deliverables include a prototype, procedure documentation, a written report, and engineering drawings.

Objective • To design a sample holder that will improve the resolution and accuracy of the rapid scanning x-ray fluorescence technique.
Constraints • Sample must be mounted vertically for at least 6 hours without sliding. • Contain samples of varying dimensions. • Sample must be ready for scanning before it is packed for transportation. • Easy and fast to load and clean. • All components must be metal free. • Compatible with existing stages. • Budget.
Deliverables • Prototype • Procedure • Written Report • Engineering Drawings
Extras • Average brain slice mass: 150g (based on 1.0cm thickness)
