  4. Environmental Challenges • Hard Rock • Chemicals used along with explosives • Placer Mining • Take away from the surface • Refinement Process • Cyanide and Sulfuric Acid • Wash off acid and going into wastes • Nitric Acid

  5. Mercury • One of the byproducts of the gold mining process • Mercury is generally attached so they melt and refine it off as well

Mining in Amazon • Because of recent gold rush comparable to the 1850’s California gold rush there has been a mass of growth of small informal mining companies who are using bad techniques • Hydraulic Mining • Released excess sediment into Amazon • Mercury • Finding its way back into the river after refinement process • Unregulated

  7. Mining in U.S. • Nevada( largest gold producing state) has been suffering from large open pit mining and Cyanide heap leaching techniques • CONTROVERCIES • A lot of gold mines found on Government land • Mining companies aren’t paying royalties
