  3. Importance of Word Meanings • Have you ever misunderstood the meaning of a word? Or had someone misunderstand one of your words? What happened? How did you feel? • Every word in the Bible is important • It is not enough for a disciple to get the “general sense” • The better the disciple understands the words of the Bible • “the words that I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63) • Illustration - Galatians 6:1 • “Restore” = katartizw = Kartartidzo • Used elsewhere of a fisherman “mending” his nets and of a doctor “setting” a broken bone. • “restoring” calls for expert repairing skill • “gentleness” – A few verses later shown as a “fruit of the Spirit”

How are the meanings of words determined? • Step One: Study how words are used • Finding all of its occurrences in Scripture • Specifying its meaning in each of these references • Learning anything one can about its usage outside of Scripture • Tools • Concordance • Alphabetical listing of the important words of a book, with references to the passages in which they occur (e.g. Strong’s) • Greek/Hebrew Dictionary • Vine’s Concise Dictionary of Bible Words • Commentaries on the original language • Robertson’s Word Pictures, or Vincent’s Word Studies • Bible Software w/ search capability • www.onlinebible.net, blueletterbible.org

How are the meanings of words determined? • Step Two: Determine the context of the Word • A word may have several possible meanings. • All of those meanings can’t be assumed every time • Word meanings are determined by the words around them • “Run” • My son runs a company • My son runs in a race • “Match” • A piece of wood, tipped with a composition that catches fire by friction? • An athletic contest where boxing or tennis competition occurs? • A girl you know who would just be an ideal mate for a boy you know? • A football team which is equal in ability to another?

How are the meanings of words determined? • Helpful clues to determine meanings in context • Look for synonyms (a word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word in the same language) • “Receive”: Lambano (1 Cor 2:12) vs. dechomai (1 Cor 2:14) • Vine’s Says: "There is a certain distinction between lambano and dechomai.... in that in many instances lambano suggests a self-prompted taking, whereas dechomai more frequently indicates a welcoming or an appropriating reception." • Look for antonyms (a word whose meaning is opposite to that of another word in the same language) • “flesh”: Galatians 5:16, 17 • Here we see that the flesh has desires which are contrary to those of the Spirit

How are the meanings of words determined? • Look for clarifying phrases (which fill out, expand or elaborate the meaning of the word) • “perfect”: 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 • “perfect” = “thoroughly furnished to all good works” • Look for cross references (other passages where similar words or thoughts occur – Good study Bible’s have these) • Matthew 7:11 vs. Luke 11:13 (Good gifts = Holy Spirit ??) • Ephesians 5:18 – 20 vs. Colossians 3:16-17 (Filled w/ Spirit = Filled w/ Word??)

  8. Exercise 1 Study the word choliy, translated as “griefs” in the King James Version of Isaiah 53:4. Would you translate it differently than King James? • What does the Hebrew dictionary say about it? • Use a concordance to see what other verses use this Word. How is the word used in these other verses? • How do other Bible version (NIV, NASB, etc.) translate Isaiah 53:4? • What do commentaries say? • Are there any cross references that can help?

  9. Exercise 2 In each of the following verses the phrase quoted is further defined by a synonym, antonym or clarifying phrase. Following each reference and phrase, briefly state the further definition. • II Corinthians 12:7 - what can we say about the identity of Paul’s thorn in the flesh? • Ephesians 6:12 - who are the rulers? • I Corinthians 2:4 - what can be said about words in demonstration of the Spirit and power? • I John 3:4 - what is sin? • James 1:25 - how can one continue in the perfect law? • Ephesians 1:13 - what is the message of truth?
