    1. FCAT Short and Extended Responses Here we go!! Wohoo!

    2. General Tips Just answer the questionyou do not need to restate it If using a direct quote from the text, put it in quotation marks You will only be graded on writing inside the box Do not include your opinion or outside informationthis test is assessing how well you read not what you know!

    3. More General Tips Read the question carefully, underlining key words/phrases Authors purposes or opinions are the focusnot yours! Write neatly Partial credit is given just for attempting the answer RELAX!!! Youre going to do great!

    4. Short Response Questions Short-Response items include both a question and instructions on how to answer the question. Example: Why was it dangerous to travel on the route from Fez to Timbuktu during the summer months? Support your answer with details from the passage.

    5. Short Response Questions The recommended time allotment is 3-5 minutes. Questions are worth 0, 1, or 2 points. Students must answer in the space provided--9 lines! Write two examples/details with an explanation

    6. Short Response Score of 2 The response indicates that the student has a complete understanding of the reading concept embodied in the task. The student has provided a response that is accurate, complete, and fulfills all the requirements of the task. Necessary support and examples are included and the information given is clearly text-based.

    7. Short Response Example Question: Twice on his journey the author encounters his favorite pattern of tracks. Describe the track patterns he sees and the animals that make them. Use details and information from the passage to support your answer.

    8. What score would you give this short response? The author encounters a track triangle. It is where three sets of animal tracks meet and form a triangle. The first triangle consisted of a fox, a snowshoe hare, and a squirrel. The second was made up of a snowshoe hare, a ruffed grouse, and a white-footed mouse. This response is a 2 because it completely answers the question and draws on text detailsThis response is a 2 because it completely answers the question and draws on text details

    9. What score would you give this short response? The track patterns that he saw were the perfectly printed footprints. A track triangle in which each side is composed of a different animals footprint. One side of this was formed by the dainty footprints of a fox. Another was the short hopping tracks of a snowshoe hare, and the third was a staccato line of red squirrel paw prints. This response is a 1 because it answers part of the question (the first time that the author sees the triangle) but not the second part.This response is a 1 because it answers part of the question (the first time that the author sees the triangle) but not the second part.

    10. What score would you give this response? On his journey the author encounters his favorite pattern of tracks. According to the text he encounters foxprints and red squirrel paw prints. Therefore the authors favorite animals are foxes and squirrels.     11. Extended Response Extended-Response items include both a question and instructions on how to answer the question. However, both are usually more complex than a Short-Response question

    12. Extended Response The recommended time allotment is 10-15 minutes. Questions are worth 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 points. Students must answer in the space provided--14 lines! One extended response = 4 multiple choice questions. Write four examples and details=5-7 sentences

    13. Extended Response Score of 4 The response indicates that the student has a thorough understanding of the reading concept embodied in the task. The student has provided a response that is accurate, complete, and fulfills all the requirements of the task. Necessary support and/or examples are included, and the information is clearly text-based.

    14. Extended Response Example Question At the beginning of the story, the father speaks in an authoritative voice to tell his four children they will move the tree from the backyard on the following Saturday. Are the fathers voice and actions authoritative throughout the story? Use details and information from the story to explain your answer.

    15. What score would you give this response? I think the fathers voice and actions are authoritative throughout the story. The way everyone looks at him shows that they consider him the boss of the family. Joe is nervous when he explains why he cannot help move the tree. When the father responds to Mickey, he points out that Saturday is his day off, too, even though he says, all right. After he listens to all the childrens reasons or excuses rather than trying to find a time when they could do it together, he says, All right, Ill do it myself. At the end of the story he smiles, but it is not clear if he is smiling because he is happy they want to help him or if he is smiling because he got what he wanted.
