  1. It is Time to Consider a Graduate Degree! Presentation to SPED 529 Students Department of Special Education

  2. Why Pursue Your Master’s Degree? • Prepares you for leadership roles in schools • Advances your skills in using research to improve teaching and learning • Increases your earning power in Birth-Adult education settings, including higher education

  3. How Much More? • Once you have successfully completed all coursework for the Level I and Level II credentials, at least 10 additional course units are required for the MSE: • SPED 501 (Intro to MSE SPED) • SPED 510 (Research Methods) • SPED 586 (Current Trends) • SPED 595/596/597/598 (Culminating Experience) • Not all courses may be taken in the same semester, so careful planning is required!

  4. Master of Science in Education with Concentration in Special Education(Level I and Level II courses are in red) • Core Classes • 16 units • 501 • 510 • 522 • 529 • 531/532/535 • 586 • Electives • 12 units • 504 • 515/520 • 533 • 551 • 584 • Culminating Experience • 3-6 units • Project (596/597) • Thesis (596/598) • Exam (595) (available starting Fall 2008)

  5. The Clock is Ticking! • The University will accept only 9 units of coursework taken BEFORE you are an accepted MSE student! • And, the University allows you only 5 years to complete your MSE – and the clock starts with the first course you take. • So, if you don’t apply to the MSE program in a timely manner, you risk taking courses that will not be able to count toward your MSE!

  6. How Long Does the Application Process Take? • Your application to the MSE program may take up to 6 months or more to process. • The length depends upon: • How quickly you submit transcripts and supporting materials • How many applications were submitted before yours • At what point in the semester you submit your application • Whether there are any glitches in your application, such as GPA calculations

  7. What Should You Do? • File a CHANGE OF OBJECTIVE form with Admissions and Records • Enroll in SPED 501 – Summer or Intersession

  8. Why SPED 501? • In SPED 501, you will: • Complete the MSE admissions process • Review program requirements • Create and submit your Study Plan • Select an option for your culminating experience
