  2. Unfortunately, the majority of people who lose their lives in bushfire do so because of poorly timed and poorly planned last minute evacuation. . BUSHFIRE FACTS

  3. There are a few bushfires that are under the “disaster” banner. Some of these were in: • South Australia and Victoria in 1983, which claimed 76 lives and was designated as “Ash Wednesday”. • Southern Victoria, 1969 when 23 passed away. • New South Wales (1968) in the Blue Mountains and coastal region. 14 lives were taken during this fire. • Hobart and Southern Tasmania, 1967, which left 62 dead. • Victoria, 1939 and was named “Black Friday”. It took 71 lives. • Bushfires in Australia occur either as a Grass Fire or Forest Fire

  4. HOW TO BUSHFIRES START? There are many ways that a bushfire can start including someone dropping a cigarette, hot windy days and someone doing something that creates sparks, fires in other places catch on, matches and lightning strikes.

  5. Black Saturday Australia’s worst bushfire was Black Saturday, it destroyed 2029 homes and killed 114 people.

  7. How did the Ash Wednesday bushfires start? The bushfires started in a number of ways: through the clashing of electric power lines, tree branches connecting with power lines, fires being deliberately lit, and through unknown causes.

  8. How much damage was caused in the fires? The Victorian fires burnt an area twice the size of metropolitan Melbourne, around 200,000 hectares. A great number of people lost their homes, possessions, stores, equipment, machinery and stock in the fires.

  9. How many lives were lost in the ash Wednesday fires? The Ash Wednesday fires claimed 75 lives in total, 47 in Victoria and 28 in South Australia. The largest number of lives lost was in the Upper Beaconsfield fire with 20 deaths. Hundreds of others were burnt or otherwise injured. Twelve volunteer firefighters in Victoria were killed in the fire at Beaconsfield.
