Why virtualize • Make more efficient use of hardware resources. • Faster provisioning. • Smaller physical footprint. • Better business continuity with high availability hardware fail over within the primary data center. • Position for redundancy allowing disaster recovery. • Position for data center migration.
Progress SMO Development Environment • heavily used • ~60 VMs on 2 blades • hardware upgrade purchased this year Production Environment • 125 VMs on 11 blades (will increase to 12 blades shortly) • ~155 VMs by 2013 • would like 100% servers in VMware but in reality (various technical reasons) ~35 will remain physical by 2013
SRM Progress Site Recovery Mananger • Allows for failover of VMware environment from primary data center to redundant site • Proof of concept testing completed. • ESX servers at redundant site in process of being set up. • Expected implementation of redundancy by end of FY09-10.
Futures • Infrastructure is in place for continued growth. • Within ITS, we have started to funnel new services to the VMware environment when it is feasible (i.e. ask whether the service is "virtualize-able".) • We view the ITS VMware environment as the focal point for virtualization services on campus (UAlbany cloud) • Possible way to house servers that currently reside outside of ITS data center - creating efficiency campus wide
