The African elephant, the largest land animal, thrives in diverse habitats like forests, open grasslands, and near water sources throughout Africa. These herbivores eat small branches, grass, leaves, fruit, roots, and tree bark. With a gestation period of 22 months, calves are born about 3.5 feet tall and weigh around 200 pounds. Males average 13.5 feet high while females are 8.5 feet tall. Known for their incredible intelligence, they boast the largest brain of any animal and are social, living in herds. Sadly, they face threats from humans, lions, and hyenas.
