iSCSI – What is it? • iSCSI (Internet Small Computer System Interface) specifies a way to “encapsulate” SCSI commands in a TCP/IP network connection: IP Header TCP Header Gigabit Ethernet iSCSI Header SCSI commands and data Explains how to extract SCSI commands and data Provides information necessary to guarantee delivery Provides Link Addressing, large frame sizes, and flow control Contains “routing” information so the message can find its way through the network

Accessing a Volume Using iSCSI • To access a volume, a host needs only an industry-standard iSCSI initiator. Each major operating system supports an iSCSI initiator. • Host system access to a volume is through the group IP address and the iSCSI target for the volume. • After the initial iSCSI connection and authentication, the host is re-directed to a network connection that is optimal for performance (for example, a network interface on the member that contains the requested data). • Once connected, a volume appears as a SCSI disk that can be formatted with the operating system’s normal utilities.
