  2. Love One AnotherJohn 15:12-17 The English word, love, is used with a wide variety of meanings and applications The Greeks used e[roV / eros to describe romantic and sexual “love.” The Greeks used fivloV / philos to describe the “love” of friendship

  3. Love One AnotherJohn 15:12-17 God’s love and the love He commands us to have for one another is ajgavph / agape - selfless, sacrificial

  4. CONTEXT John 13-15 They have finished the Passover meal, and Jesus is now preparing His disciples for His soon departure Jesus would prepare a place for them in His Father’s house, intercede for them, and would return for them

  5. CONTEXT John 13-15 He would send to them the Holy Spirit. They were to abide in Him that they might bear fruit & have peace John 15:12-17

  6. Love One AnotherJohn 15:12-13 Jesus changed the command to love others “as yourself” to as He loved them, a love greater in: Scope: A love that extends to: Sinners (Romans 5:8) The weak & despised (1 Cor. 1:26-28) Enemies (Luke 23:34)

  7. Love One AnotherJohn 15:12-13 Jesus wants our love to have the same breadth of scope - Matthew 5:44-45

  8. Love One AnotherJohn 15:12-13 Jesus’ love is greater in Depth: The depth of Jesus’ love is seen in His sacrifice of Himself on our behalf - Philippians 2:5-8 Countless Christian martyrs have followed this example in dying for the sake of others

  9. Love One AnotherJohn 15:12-13 Jesus’ love is greater in Patience: Jesus became irritated with people (Luke 9:41; 24:25), yet loved them to the end (John 13:1) We are to follow that example in loving others - Eph. 4:2; 1 Peter 4:8; Gal. 6:1-4)

  10. Love One AnotherJohn 15:12-13 Jesus’ love is greater in Commitment: Jesus looked out for and sacrificed Himself for the benefit of those He loved We are to follow that example in our love for one another - Philippians 2:3-4; Hebrews 10:24-24

  11. Commitment to Loving the Brethren Your commitment to Christian fellowship & obeying the “one another” commands Absence due to selfishness reveals low commitment to God and others God’s commands are given for you to obey, not to lament the failure of others & excuse your own failure

  12. Commitment to Loving the Brethren There is a direct relationship between commitment to the church body & personal response to the individual Jesus’ command to love as He loves applies to you regardless of what anyone else may or may not do

  13. Commitment to Loving the Brethren Loving your children teaches you to love selflessly and sacrificially Do not let relationships end because of your own lack of love, but because they refuse it

  14. Jesus’ FriendsJohn 15:14-15 Jesus is the Creator and master, we are His slaves, yet He offers us friendship Friendship with Jesus is conditional based upon your obedience to His commands (John 15:14) Obedience reveals love for Jesus and abiding in Him resulting in bearing fruit of righteousness

  15. Jesus’ FriendsJohn 15:14-15 You can be a friend / love someone without them being a friend / loving you in return Friendship allows for additional communication, and Jesus reveals His friends the Father’s teaching

  16. Chosen by JesusJohn 15:16-17 There is a universal offer of salvation - John 3:15-16, 11:26; 12:46 and Acts 2:21; 10:43 All people are called / commanded to seek God - Isaiah 55:6; Jeremiah 29:13 & Amos 5:6

  17. Chosen by JesusJohn 15:16-17 All people are called / commanded to repent - Matthew 4:17; Mark 1:15; Luke:5:32; 24:47 & Acts 17:30 People do not seek God, repent or even understand on their own - Romans 3:10-12; 1 Cor. 2:14; Eph. 2:1

  18. Chosen by JesusJohn 15:16-17 Salvation is according to God’s sovereign choice made before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4) If salvation was by man’s choice, man would be judging God and His offer instead of being humbled

  19. Chosen by JesusJohn 15:16-17 A salvation dependent on man’s choice would be lost when he changes his mind. A true Christian is eternally secure in God’s sovereignty - John 6:39; 10:28-29; Romans 8:31-39

  20. Chosen by JesusJohn 15:16-17 Jesus chose His disciples that they should bear fruit. The same is true of us - Ephesians 2:10 Those chosen by Jesus can pray with confidence God will grant what is asked (1 John 5:14-15; James 4:3)

  21. Chosen by JesusJohn 15:16-17 The faith of the disciples would be tested, but they would find comfort in Jesus’ promises Jesus concludes this section by repeating His command that they love one another

  22. CONCLUSIONS The hard issues of life will test people and will eventually reveal what the actually believe Genuine Christianity is demonstrated by love of God, other Christians & the lost - James 1:27
