PERSUASIVE WRITING Mrs. Tiffany Gholston
Persuasion • Writing intended to persuade the reader to follow the writer’s way of thinking about something
Thesis • An effective thesis statement tells the reader specifically what you plan to write about • Usually comes at the end of the introductory paragraph • Takes a stand or expresses a specific feeling about, or feature of, your topic • A specific topic plus a particular stand, feeling, or opinion equals an effective thesis statement
Organization • All parts of the essay should work together to build a thoughtful, convincing solution • Introductory paragraph is an effective beginning paragraph to grab the reader’s attention, provide information that identifies the problem, and states your opinion
Introductory Paragraph • First sentence should begin with an important or interesting fact, ask an interesting question, or start with a quotation to grad the reader’s attention • The second sentence should give some background information • The third sentence should introduce the specific topic of the essay. This should build up to the thesis. • The last sentence should give the thesis statement plus three reasons for this view without adding any details
Body Paragraph One • First body paragraph should build your argument in a logical way discussing the first reason you listed in your thesis. You should not discuss anything here except your first reason. • Start with a topic sentence. • Organize your points in a logical way with examples and illustrations • Avoid attacking others • Be brief and direct • Offer a reasonable solution • Present opposing argument accurately, but reveal its weaknesses
Body Paragraph Two • Second body paragraph should build your argument in a logical way discussing the second reason you listed in your thesis. You should not discuss anything here except your second reason. • Start with a topic sentence. • Organize your points in a logical way with examples and illustrations • Avoid attacking others • Be brief and direct • Offer a reasonable solution • Present opposing argument accurately, but reveal its weaknesses
Body Paragraph Three • Third body paragraph should build your argument in a logical way discussing the third reason you listed in your thesis. You should not discuss anything here except your third reason. • Start with a topic sentence. • Organize your points in a logical way with examples and illustrations • Avoid attacking others • Be brief and direct • Offer a reasonable solution • Present opposing argument accurately, but reveal its weaknesses
Conclusion • Should leave the reader with the feeling that there is no other alternative • Call for action • Restate important points
Powerful Sentence Patterns • Use strong active verbs • Ask a question • Use an exclamatory sentence • Open with an adverb • Open with a prepositional phrase • The verb precedes the subject • Use conservation or quotation • Use an appositive • Open with an adverb clause • Use parallel structure in words, phrases, and clauses • Open with an adjective • Open with an adjective phrase • The student leaped to his feet. • Why did the student leap to his feet? • The student leaped to his feet! • Suddenly, the student leaped to his fee. • At the buzzer, the student leaped to his feet. • To his feet leaped the student. • A concerned opponent yelled, “The student leaped to his feet!” • The student, Geoff Woolard, leaped to his feet. • After the game ended, the student leaped to his feet. • The student watched with excitement, screamed with joy, and leaped to his feet. • Excited, the student leaped to his feet. • Hyperactive by nature, the student leaped to his feet.
