  1. CCSDS Areas Overview CCSDS Protocols About SANA CCSDS Identifiers CCSDS SFDUs Login Status: You are not logged in SANA Space Assigned Numbers Authority The Space Assigned Numbers Authority (SANA) is the core registrar for the CCSDS Management Council’s activities. Many space mission protocols require that someone keep track of key protocol numbering assignments that were added after the protocol came out. Typical examples of the kinds of registries needed are: Spacecraft Identifiers (GSCIDs) Protocol Version Numbers Reserved Application Process Identifiers (APIDs) SFDU Control Authorities The SANA provides this key configuration management service for CCSDS. Likewise, there are many different data objects that need to be globally accessible within the CCSDS in order to support mission planning and operations and the activities of CCSDS itself. A “Data Object”, within this context, is defined as any known or imagined participant in mission communications, planning, and operations or trajectory propagation, tracking, attitude determination and orbit determination. Examples are: Protocol entities and assigned numbers SLE port numbers, service providers and protocol numbers CCSDS global XML schema and related structures Ground and space tracking stations (individual antennas; maybe complexes) Orbiters, Rovers, Landers, balloons, airplanes, stations Multi-part spacecraft and constellations that substantially separate sometime during the mission This web-site provides a single interface for accessing the CCSDS-controlled registries and CCSDS data objects required for supporting mission planning and operations as well as the activities of CCSDS itself. The organization has also developed Recommendations for a wide array of data description and archiving standards to support end-user handling and storage of telemetry data.

  3. CCSDS Areas Overview CCSDS Protocols About SANA CCSDS Identifiers CCSDS SFDUs Login Status: You are not logged in CCSDS Space Communication Protocols The model depicted here is a five-layer model sometimes used to represent the protocol layers of Internet-type data communication. It is a simplification of the OSI seven-layer model, with the OSI Session and Presentation layers omitted. Existing CCSDS Recommendations for space data system protocols and services designed for use on the space link (the communications link between a spacecraft and ground station) are shown in blue. The Internet protocols, in gray, are included to show how they fit into the CCSDS protocol “stack” when used in conjunction with the CCSDS Link and Physical layers. In addition to the protocols and services identified in the model, the CCSDS is developing a suite of Space Link Extension (SLE) services designed to extend the space link, specifically, to enable spacecraft control and data acquisition from terrestrial locations remote from the ground station terminus of the space link. The organization has also developed Recommendations for a wide array of data description and archiving standards to support end-user handling and storage of telemetry data. 7. CCSDS Areas Overview CCSDS Protocols About SANA CCSDS Identifiers CCSDS SFDUs Login Status: You are not logged in Space Packet Protocol The Space Packet Protocol is one of 2 CCSDS developed protocols for the Network Layer of the Space Communication Protocols. The Space Packet Protocol provides the capability to efficiently transfer processed data over space links and the capability for routing data through a space data system. The protocol data units of the Space Packet Protocol are called Space Packets. This protocol does not provide a function for retransmitting lost or corrupted data, so retransmission should be done by a higher-layer protocol if complete delivery of data is required. Over a space link, protocol data units of this protocol are transferred with Space Data Link Protocols. Protocol Specification For a detailed description of the Space Packet Protocol, refer to the Space Packet Protocol. Red Book. Identifiers Identifiers used by the Space Packet Protocol are detailed in the Space Link Identifiers. Blue Book. and are also listed here. Additional Related Documents and Links Space Packet Protocol–Summary of Concept and Rationale. Green Book.. 8. CCSDS Areas Overview CCSDS Protocols About SANA CCSDS Identifiers CCSDS SFDUs Login Status: You are not logged in SCPS Network Protocol (SCPS-NP) The SCPS Network Protocol (SCPS-NP) is one of 2 CCSDS developed protocols for the Network Layer of the Space Communication Protocols. The SCPS-NP provides a variety of addressing and routing capabilities, some of which are compatible with the Internet, and can be used with SCPS or Internet upper-layer protocols. The protocol data units of SCPS-NP are called datagrams. This protocol does not provide a function for retransmitting lost or corrupted data, so retransmission should be done by a higher-layer protocol if complete delivery of data is required. Over a space link, protocol data units of this protocol are transferred with Space Data Link Protocols. Protocol Specification For a detailed description of the SCPS-NP, refer to the Space Communications Protocol Specification (SCPS)–Network Protocol (SCPS-NP). Blue Book. 9. CCSDS Areas Overview CCSDS Protocols About SANA CCSDS Identifiers CCSDS SFDUs Login Status: You are not logged in CCSDS Identifiers CCSDS uses identifiers to identify protocols, addresses, and data formats it has developed. And even though some of these identifiers are defined in the Recommendations that specify the protocols, management of identifiers are performed independently of management of protocol specifications so that values of the identifiers can be defined (or re-defined) without changing the protocol specifications themselves. Each identifier is managed by one of the three methods listed below depending on its characteristics: a) defined by CCSDS as part of protocol specification; b) assigned by CCSDS upon request by Agencies; c) managed by individual projects. CCSDS Identifiers include: a) Space Link Protocol Identifiers, b) Control Authority Identifiers (CAIDs), c) Data Description Identifiers (ADIDs), and d) Spacecraft Identifiers (GSCIDs/SCIDs) Some Identifiers managed by projects (not defined or assigned by CCSDS) have values reserved by CCSDS for special uses. The Identifiers with reserved values are: a) Application Process Identifiers (APIDs) b) Virtual Channel Identifiers (VCIDs) Login Lookup Services Identifiers Reserved APIDs Reserved VCIDs ADIDs GSCID/SCIDs Mission Information Missions Tracking Stations Graphical View Database Search Data Structures Glossary Quick Links CCSDS Home Page CCSDS Control Authorities CCSDS Documents . . 10. CCSDS Areas Overview CCSDS Protocols About SANA CCSDS Identifiers CCSDS SFDUs Login Status: You are not logged in CCSDS Space Communication Protocol Identifiers Most of the Space Communication Protocols developed by CCSDS use identifiers (or version numbers) to identify protocols, addresses, and data formats. Each identifier is managed by one of the three methods listed below depending on its characteristics: a) defined by CCSDS as part of protocol specification; b) assigned by CCSDS upon request by Agencies; c) managed by individual projects. The table below lists the Space Communication Protocols that use identifiers. For more information regarding the identifiers used by a specific protocol, click on the protocol name in the table. 11. CCSDS Areas Overview CCSDS Protocols About SANA CCSDS Identifiers CCSDS SFDUs Login Status: You are not logged in Authority Data Description Identifiers (ADIDs) All data descriptions registered with the SFDU Control Authority organization are uniquely identified by an Authority Data Description Identifier (ADID), where: ADID = CAID + DDID where CAID = the Control Authority Identifier, which uniquely identifies the MACAO; and DDID = the Data Description Identifier, which uniquely identifies the data description within a given MACAO. Data descriptions are available from both the Control Authority (CA) Agent and Member Agency Control Authority Organizations (MACAO). Those data descriptions which are available from the CA Agent have been assigned a CCSDS ADID. The CCSDS ADID is formulated as follows: CCSDS ADID = CCSDzzzz where CCSD = the CAID for the CA Agent; and zzzz = the DDID, composed of four Restricted ASCII characters (i.e., 0-9, A-Z) which, combined with the CAID, make the CCSDS ADID unique in the CCSDS domain. The MACAO ADID is formulated as follows: MACAO ADID = xyyyzzzz where xyyy = the CAID for that MACAO; and zzzz = the DDID, composed of four Restricted ASCII characters which, combined with the CAID, make the MACAO ADID unique in the CCSDS domain. 12. CCSDS Areas Overview CCSDS Protocols About SANA CCSDS Identifiers CCSDS SFDUs Login Status: You are not logged in SFDU Control Authority Organization The Control Authority organization is the mechanism within the SFDU concept for ensuring that the descriptions of data will always exist and that the location of the data description and software to interpret the data can readily be found from information contained in the data set. Each data description within the Control Authority organization is given a unique identifier. This unique identifier (Authority Description Identifer or ADID) is part of the standardized label included with the application data and identifies both a particular Member Agency Control Authority Office (MACAO) as well as a particular data description within that MACAO. In this way, any user acquiring the application data is able to identify the particular MACAO where the data description is registered and obtain the data description. Control Authority Organization Structure The Control Authority Organization is made up of: - the CCSDS Secretariat, supported by the Control Authority (CA) Agent ; - a number of Member Agency Control Authority Offices (MACAOs). The CCSDS Secretariat, established by the CCSDS, is the Control Authority Office to which all MACAOs ultimately report. Both Member and Observer Agencies of the CCSDS may participate in the Control Authority organization and are referred to as Participating Agencies. A Participating Agency must establish a Primary MACAO, which is the official Agency contact with the CCSDS Secretariat. Related Documentation For information regarding the Control Authority Procedures (including services provided by the Control Authority organization), refer to the Standard Formatted Data Units – Control Authority Procedures Tutorial.
