  3. “If you want the American Dream, go to Finland” - Amanda Ripley The Smartest Kids in the World This is a harsh quote for American teachers to see. Each day, we painstakingly work to grow our students brains in math. Are our efforts taking our students far enough?

  4. What are the implications? In Wisniowski’s article Maths for Careers – How Mathematics is Used on the Jobs?, we see that math is used just about any and all careers. Can you think of a career that doesn’t involve math? The European Union has identified mathematical competence to be one of the major necessities for personal fulfillment, active citizenship and social inclusion and employability in modern society. According to this data, our students are not being properly prepared for a competitive world economy.

  5. What can we do as teachers? • The PISA exam measures reasoning and problem solving skills. Therefore, we need to challenge our students to work through tough problems. • Make math real! If students can see how these skills are involved in everyday life, they will be more connected and invested! • Set expectations high! In order for them to competitive in their future job market, we need to push our students and scaffold them as necessary.
