  2. A philosophical theory or approach which emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of will.

EXISTENCE PRECEDES ESSENCE: Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) • A person is born a blank slate, and humanity has no predetermined values or morals common to all mankind. • A person must form his or her own conceptions of existence by asserting control over his or her own actions and choice. • A human being gains his or her essence through their individual actions and choice, and it is only through the process of living that one defines oneself.
