Open Government Data • Access to high quality data is critical to innovation, quality improvement, and increased efficiency in health care1 • 3 Keys to success • Expansion of data access • Leverage nongovernmental partners and applications • Improve data iteratively and focus on data and information as a line of business • Data has the power to transform care by providers, inform consumers, and drive disruptive innovations 1 Conway PH and Vanlare JM.   3. Overview • Examples of Compare Sites with related data and future directions • Moving to easier data access and use

Physician Compare • Launched as physician compare in 2010 • Physician Compare currently has information on approximately 800,000 Medicare enrolled providers • Provides information on physicians and other healthcare professionals such as: • Name • Address and phone number • Specialties • Clinical training • Gender • Written and spoken language • Hospital affiliation • Physician Quality Reporting System and e-rx participation

Physician Compare Future • Scheduled for a full site redesign in early 2013 • Future measures and information to be added to the site include: • PQRS, EHR, and MOC Participation • PQRS Group Practice Reporting Option (GPRO) Participation and performance • Patient experience measures • Performance measures • Downloadable data, while not currently available, is strongly under consideration

Hospital Compare • Initially launched March 31, 2005 • Redesign released July 2010 • Features • Hospital Demographic Data • Hospital Process of Care Measures • Hospital Outcome of Care Measures • Patients’ Hospital Experience Measures • Patient Safety Measures • Recently efficiency measure added • Volume Data • Data is same data used for hospital value based purchasing • Plan for future enhancements in terms of data timeliness and ease of data access

Dialysis Facility Compare • Posting of data for dialysis facilities across the U.S. • Measures relevant to end stage renal disease patients • Measures drive payment for dialysis facilities • There will be a major redesign to bring DFC into alignment with the look, feel, and functionality of the other Compare Tools. • Additional measures will be added at the time of the transition in platforms.

  14. Web Services Architecture • All compare data on data.medicare.gov is machine readable. • Starting with July 2012 release, data for all tools will be updated on data.medicare.gov at the same time as the data on the sites.

Web Services Architecture • Benefits of web services architecture --Data.medicare.gov - Enables other audiences to embed/reuse CMS data via an application programming interface (API). • Datasets can be customized and saved by users at low cost. • We can embed datasets on the Compare tools from data.medicare.gov and other users can embed our datasets onto their sites.

  16. Web Services Architecture • We/others can combine our data with other sets (i.e., maps). • We/others can customize and tell stories with our data. • Ultimately, we will transition the downloadable databases for all tools to the data.medicare.gov platform.
