  1. Football 101 By: Julian Vega, Phil Nigro, Brendan Kennedy, Matt Stern

  2. Background • In 1876 a good old jolly man named Walter Camp invented the great American sport known as Football • Converted Rugby and Soccer into one sport • The NFL also known as National Football League was formed in 1920

  3. Rules of the Game • A football team needs 11 players in order to play a game • Each team tries to get the ball in the other opponents end zone in order to gain points • A team consist of 3 groups, offense, defense and special teams

  4. Objectives • The point of the game is to get more points than the opposing team • The offense tries to get into the end zone by running the ball with a running back or throwing the ball to a receiver • The defense tries to stop the opposing team’s offense by tackling the player with the ball

  5. Offense • The center hikes the ball to the quarterback • He can either hand in off to the running back or throw it to the wide receiver • The wide receiver catches the ball and tries to get to the end zone before getting tackled • They offense has four downs to get a first down, which is ten yards • If they do not get the first they turn the ball over to the other team

  6. Defense • The defense tries to defend their end zone • They try to stop the offense from getting first downs or touchdowns • They need to tackle the offense of player who’s knee must touch the ground in order to be down

  7. Special Teams • To begin a football game you must kick off the ball to the other team • The receiving part of the special teams consist of a kick returner and blockers • The team kicking off consist of a kicker and the remaining players run down the field to tackle the kick returner

Special team cont… • Special teams also punt the ball and kick the extra point • A punter punts the football when the offense doesn’t gain a first down • Same concept of kick off, the punter kicks the ball and the remaining players stop the returner from gaining yards • After scoring a touch down, the kicker has to kick a extra point through the field goal post from the 10 yard line
