  2. Temperature • Temperature – A measure of the average kinetic energy of the individual particles in matter. • The higher the temperature of the particles, the more kinetic energy they have. • Temperature is measured using a thermometer.

  4. Thermal Energy & Heat • Thermal Energy – The total energy of all of the particles in an object. • Heat – Thermal energy that is transferred from a warmer object to a cooler object. • Example: A cup of hot tea has thermal energy. Heat is transferred from the cup to your hand.

  5. Specific Heat • Specific Heat – The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a material by 1 degree Kelvin. • A material with a high specific heat can absorb a great deal of thermal energy without a great change in temperature.
